Making sure that schoolchildren get the right nutrients may be getting down to the basics, and city schools hope to put up the Nutri-pan.

The Nutri-Pan, (nutrient rich bread) which would soon be piloted at the Tagbilaran City Central School would be baked in the schools and sold at the canteens, City Health Office representative Dr. Aldoiza Cepe said.

The National Nutrition Council is willing to put up P30T and some 10 days of operational costs for the city supplement feeding program and Mayor Dan Lim has also vowed to put in funds, Dr. Cepe said.

With the development, the City Nutrition Council has proposed the activity to respond to the growing need to spice up the options a child may find at the school canteens.

The supplemental feeding project met a few kinks with the elections, the nutrition activities in the barangays, the anti-dengue council activities and still some concerns that need to be ironed it, Dr Cepe said.

The city move to put up the Nutri-Pan is a response to the call for more nutrition-rich food, which should also be available for schoolchildren in school canters.

The nutri-pan, which would be using fortified flour would be baked complete with the right amount of nutrients a growing child needs daily.

Nuti-pan, according to Dr. Uy could also be worked out like the former nutri-bun which was also produced in school based bakeries and done with the right nutritional content.

Aside from getting assured of the right nutrition, parents organizations could also look at the possibility of organizing themselves into baking groups and taking turns in preparing the bread.

The proceeds of the nutrition-rich bread for sale at a low price would go to strengthen the city nutritional feeding programs, Dr. Cepe said.

Moreover, parents also would be assured of the clean food that their child would buy.

Bohol has had a sad and fatal experience of pupils who fell ill or died died for buying contaminated food. (rachiu/PIA)
