MANILA -- A radio broadcaster was shot dead by a still unidentified suspect in Bohol on Saturday morning, police said.

Superintendent Joie Pacito Yape, spokesperson of Bohol provincial police, identified the victim as Engr. Maurito Lim, a broadcaster for the local radio station dyRD in Tagbilaran City.

Yape said the victim was slain by a lone attacker around 10:45 a.m. outside the radio station in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

A report by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said Lim was about to alight from his car when a lone gunman onboard a motorcycle shot him. Reports said Lim was hit in the left jaw, the bullet exiting on the other side of his face.

"The said suspect drove away after the incident... heading towards north direction," said Yape.

Yape said responding members of the local emergency group Tarsier 117 brought Lim to a hospital where the victim died around 1:15 p.m.

NUJP-Tagbilaran chapter vice chairman Leo Udtuhan said Lim anchored the daily public affairs program "Chairman Mao On Board," which is critical of local officials linked to the illegal drug trade.

Manhunt operation and investigation on the incident was ongoing, said Yape.

Lim's killing followed that of a female tabloid reporter who was slain by unknown suspects in Balanga, Bataan last month.

Lim was the second journalist killed in Tagbilaran, according to NUJP. (VR/Sunnex)

(UPDATE - 3:00 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines -- A broadcaster in Bohol province who had been lambasting politicians with alleged links to illicit drug dealing was murdered Saturday, Leo Udtuhan, vice chairman of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines chapter in the Central Visayas city, informed the group's main office in Manila.

Engineer Maurito Lim was about to alight from his car in front of station dyRD in Tagbilaran City when a lone gunman on board a motorcycle shot him at around 10:35 a.m., Udtuhan said.

Reports earlier indicated that Lim was hit in the left jaw, with the bullet exiting on the other side of his face.

Lim, who anchored the daily program "Chairman Mao On Board," was rushed to the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital, across the street from the station, but was pronounced dead around 1:15 p.m., Udtuhan said.

The broadcaster is the second journalist killed in Tagbilaran, the 172nd since 1986, and the 34th under the administration of President Aquino.

Bohol radio anchor shot dead

Investigators are exploring the angle that Bohol-based radio broadcaster Maurito Lim was attacked due to his work as broadcaster.

MANILA, Philippines — A radio broadcaster in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, died yesterday afternoon after being shot by a lone gunman.

Chief Inspector George Vale of the Tagbilaran City Police said Maurito Lim, 71, had just alighted from his Isuzu Crosswind sports utility vehicle at about 11 a.m. and was about to enter the office of the dyRD “Radyo Asenso” radio station at B. Inting Street when the gunman, riding a blue motorcycle, appeared.

Police said the gunman followed Lim from behind and shot him once with a caliber .45 caliber pistol at close range.

According to police, the bullet hit Lim's left jaw and exit through his right face.

The suspect then fled on his motorcycle after the shooting.

Lim was rushed to the Gallares Hospital in Tagbilaran City where he underwent emergency surgery but died at 1:15 p.m.

While investigators have yet to determine the motive behind the attack, they are looking at the possibility the killing was related to his job as a radio anchorman.

Police said Lim, an engineer who had previously worked with the National Power Corporation (Napocor) was critical of local officials before the attack.
