Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Ritchie Garcia assured on Monday that the 248 Filipino athletes will be properly equipped when they compete in the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China from Nov. 12 to 27 this year.
The veteran sports official said the PSC spent close to P10 million for the acquisition of sports equipment, adding “it will be delivered by the end of this month.â€
â€These equipment will be used not only in the Guangzhou Games but also in future international tournaments,†Garcia said in a press briefing.
The P10 million is on top of the P30 million allotted by the PSC for the country’s preparation and actual participation to the Asian Games.
Garcia said that each of the Asiad-bound athletes would also receive additional P10,500 per month for their food allowance and other nutritional needs in preparation for the prestigious sports competition.
Meanwhile, Garcia declined to speculate on how many medals the RP delegation would bring home.
â€I’ll be in Guangzhou but only as a representative of the government. We’re just supporting cast here,†Garcia said.
Earlier, RP chief of Mission Joey Romasanta said the Philippine team would surpass the country’s four gold, six silver and nine bronze medals it won in the 2006 Doha Asian Games. (PNA)
