Pacquiao-Barrera rematch sealed

A declaration of peace on Friday promises to save boxing more than any punch from Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Oscar De La Hoya on May 5, a bout that was sold as the savior.

Bob Arum and De La Hoya announced an end to hostilities with a deal that includes a significant fight - a Manny Pacquiao rematch against Marco Antonio Barrera on Oct. 6 at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay.

An out-of-court agreement settles lawsuits regarding the rights to Pacquiao, an exciting Filipino who throws more punches in a few rounds than Mayweather did in several during his split decision victory over De La Hoya.

Arum, of Top Rank, and De La Hoya's company, Golden Boy, will share in the promotion of Pacquiao.

Above all, the deal clears the table for bouts that, until Friday, seemed impossible because of a noisy feud.

Arum, De La Hoya and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer tossed around more trash talk than Mayweather, who put his name back in the headlines a few days before the announcement by saying he wanted to fight Ricky Hatton.

It was almost as if Mayweather had been tipped off that an Arum-De La Hoya settlement was imminent.

Mayweather, claiming he was annoyed at Hatton, announced his comeback Tuesday. That means Mayweather's announced retirement lasted 52 days. A Don King news conference lasts longer.

Above all, the settlement is a threat to Mayweather's claim on the mythical pound-for-pound title.

Pacquiao, the reigning junior-lightweight, is the only fighter who can knock an often-insecure Mayweather off his acknowledged hold on the top spot.

The De La Hoya-Arum agreement will allow Pacquiao to do exactly that, first against Barrera, then against Juan Manuel Marquez, who beat Barrera and fought Pacquiao to a draw.

It looks as if peace might create more just one good fight.
Always coming back
Felix Trinidad is the latest to say he will hit the comeback trail.

Rumors of his return have circulated for months. Roy Jones Jr., another retread, talks as if he is the leading candidate for Trinidad.

Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright, who fight each other July 21, also seem to be possibilities. They beat Trinidad.

However, Wright trainer Dan Birmingham doesn't think a rematch with his fighter will happen.

"Impossible," Birmingham said last week in a conference call. "They've become very, very good friends and business partners."

A rematch after Trinindad's controversial victory over De La Hoya looks like a sure money-maker.

For De La Hoya, it also would be a good time to stop, think and decide on whether to retire to the promotional side of the ropes.
