San Juan representative and senatorial candidate JV Ejercito and former senator and Philippine Swimming League (PSL) chairman Nikki Coseteng will join Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Ricardo “Richie’ Garcia to grace the opening of 17th Sandugo-UniGames at University of St. La Salle (USLS) here slated on October 22 to 28.

Also University Games (UniGames) president Roger A. Banzuela said Ejercito and Coseteng will have other events to grace.

Ejercito will join Philippine Volleyball Federation president Gener Dungo to declare open the volleyball events at 8am on Monday, while Coseteng will be the guest at the swimming event opening on Thursday along with PSL president Susan Papa.

Garcia, on the other hand, will address the participants during the opening ceremony at 6pm on October 22 at USLS Coliseum.

University of the Philippines-Diliman women volleyball team arrived on October 17 and others schools are expected to come Friday and Saturday.

He said they can still catch up with Bacolod MassKara Festival.

In women’s volleyball, University of St. La Salle is the defending champion after winning the title in Roxas City, Capiz. This is the fourth titles of the Lady Stingers winning it in 1997, 1999, 2008 and last year.

For the record, Far Eastern University won the event six times, claiming the initial staging in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2006. San Sebastian College won the title in 2001; De La Salle University won it twice in 2003 and 2004; Adamson University in 2007 and University of Sto. Tomas in 2009 and 2010.

Volleyball event so far has the most number of entries with 26 teams on the men and 24 on the women’s side.

About 50 schools already registered to compete in 13 sporting events that will be played in different venues in Bacolod City, majority of them at the University of St. La Salle campus. Men and women’s basketball will be played alternately at USLS Coliseum, West Negros University Gym and Po hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School.
