by Rey Anthony Chiu - Bohol lifting coach Samuel Alegada proved Bohol can be a heavy contender in the national
weightlifting scene when the homegrown weightlifters snatched a total of 6 gold medals, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals in the recent Philippine National games in Dumaguete City.
Bohol Weightlifting Team (BWT) jerked a dynamic start with Elien Rose Perez lifting two gold medals in the 44 kilogram women and 44 kilogram weight women secondary categories.
As if that was not enough, Febie Mae Moral made a clean snatch in the 69 kilograms women category while Samjon Alegada fixed an overhead claim for gold at Men’s Age Group B, 42 kilogram category on May 30, the first day of the competitions.
Gold still came dropping for BWT on the second day of
lifting competitions with Reynald Pep Agosto who picked the 65 kilogram men’s Junior category while his brother Richard Pep Agosto booked the gold for the 105 kilogram mens’ open category May 31.
At the PNG held May 26 to June 3, Bohol WT also pocketed 4 silver medals and 4 more bronze medals even as weightlifting is not as popular here as other competitive sports.
Governor Edgar Chatto, at one time presented the Boholano winners to the public during his weekly Kita ug ang Gobernador media forum a week after the competitions.
Boholano silver medal winners in the competition include Joseph Asa for the men’s open 62 kgs category, Elie Perez Jr. picked home 2 silver medals for youth and secondary men’s 50 kgs category while Jonasam P. Alegada convinced the judges to grant Bohol WT another silver medal for age group 40 kgs category.
Settling for the bronze medals in the two day weightlifting competitions are Sharlyn Baleros (2 Bronze medals for youth and secondary 48 kgs category, Ma. Paula Lanit, (1 Bronze medal for the secondary 40 kgs category) and Kent Estorosas claimed 1 bronze for the junior 77 kgs category.
Bohol olympian coach Samuel Alegada said he has long believed the Boholano potential for weightlifting and pursues a weight-training program to better train promising athletes of the tricks.
Alegada, who coaches with wife Jona pools the athletes who are now representing different Tagbilaran City Schools in local competitions.
