By Andy NalzaroNine-year-old chess prodigy and Bohol's pride Jerad Docena of the Grace Christian School of Tagbilaran City racked up seven perfect points and won second place in the recently concluded 15th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships Visayas Regional Leg Eliminations held at the SM City's Entertainment Plaza in Cebu City last September 1 and 2.
The Grade Four pupil who hails from barangay Tagubaas, Antequera town bested all of his seven opponents in the tournament that attracted around 500 woodpushers and qualified for the National Finals slated on October 19-22 at the SM Megamall in Mandaluying City.
Docena and the eventual kiddies champion, Lennon Hart Salgados, a 14-year old kid from Cagayan de Oro City actually both finished with the same points but the latter edged him via a superior Buchultz tiebreak points of 36.5-33.5 and settled for the second place.
According to Jerad's loving father Crispin that the national finals could be his training ground for the big international chess event at the World Youth Age Group chess championships which will be held at Antalya, Turkey on November this year.
Docena who is touted to be the next young chess grandmaster is following the footsteps of his uncle and GM-candidate IM Oliver Dimakiling. He learned of playing chess when he was just three-year old.
His trip and all of expenses in the Cebu tournament was shouldered by Grace Christian School.
