Nora Aunor as National Artist?
« on: April 18, 2012, 08:15:53 AM »
Bacolod City Representative Anthony Rolando Golez, Jr. has filed a resolution urging President Aquino, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts to name actress Nora Aunor as National Artist of the Philippines for her “immense contributions” to Philippine arts and cinema.

In House Resolution No. 2317, Golez states that Aunor, whose real name is Maria Leonora Teresa Cabaltera—Ate Guy to his fans—is regarded as the “Superstar” of Philippine entertainment.

Golez said that Aunor’s career, which has spanned more than five decades, has been filled with awards and recognition from local and international award-giving bodies for her outstanding performances, and that she was named as one of the 10 Best Asian Actresses of the Decade in 2010 by the Green Planet Movie Awards in Los Angeles. Voting by movie viewers from more than 100 countries was done online.

A National Artist of the Philippines is a title given to a Filipino who has been given the highest recognition, by virtue of a presidential proclamation, for having made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts. Honorees are conferred membership in the Order of National Artists, the regalia of which is an ornate, gilded collar of honor.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

after nora, are vilma and sharon not far behind?  and what about presidential sis kris?  they're all in the same area of pop art, a.k.a. entertainment industry.  ambot uy.  mora man ug mabarato ang 'national artist' halo ani.  personal opinion lang ba...

sure, it was nora who had changed the concept of 'artista'--- not pretty enough, not mestiza, a water peddler at a train station in bicol who rose from poverty to the heights of national pop culture consciousness.  and she has the voice.  she inspired in that she set an example that anyone can have the chance and make it big.  but did that make her an artist?  i don't know.  besides, her 'trend' has somewhat stopped.  the actresses are back to "good looks", obviously, even with the help of plastic surgery.

what if this may open the floodgates to heaven knows what?  i now wonder if this is just an intro to something more sinister.  sorry, but the selection of a national artist has its own politics.  besides, a legislator has better things to do than give vent to his being a noranian because, heavens, what will the vilmanians say?

meanwhile, i'll keep my fingers crossed because legislators aren't that idiotic.  her awards anyway can back the claim up.  still i'm awed.  there's nora there, in the pantheons of nick joaquin, fernando amorsolo, botong francisco, lucresia kasilag, napoleon abueva, etc.

what will they think of next?  resolve that the late iggy arroyo be canonized?

    Rolando S. Tinio
    Salvador F. Bernal
    Lamberto V. Avellana
    Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero
    Severino Montano
    Lino Brocka
    Fernando Poe Jr.

the politics (an example; expect much lobbying behind the scenes):

2009 National Artist of the Philippines controversy

In August 2009, the conferment of the Order of National Artists to seven individuals by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo became controversial when it was revealed that musician Ramon Santos had been dropped from the list of nominees short-listed in May that year by the selection committee, and that four other individuals had been nominated to the title via "President’s prerogative": Cecilla Guidote-Alvarez (Theater), Magno Jose "Carlo” Caparas (Visual Arts and Film), Francisco Manosa (Architecture), and Jose “Pitoy” Moreno (Fashion Design).

Members of the Philippine art community, including a number of living National Artists of the Philippines, protested that the proclamation politicized the title of National artist, and made it "a way for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to accommodate her allies."

Specific protests were raised regarding the nomination of NCCA executive director Guidote-Alvarez, because it was purportedly a breach of protocol and delicadeza (propriety), and of Carlo Caparas, because he was allegedly not qualified to be nominated under the categories of either Visual Arts or Film.
