National Artist? Dolphy first before Vilma and Nora
« on: April 24, 2012, 09:18:41 AM »
Philstar – 7 hours ago

Before the Vilmanians and the Noranians clash in another “civil war” now that the idols’ long-dormant rivalry is being revived around the issue of who should be declared a National Artist, I suggest that we should look around first to find out who really deserves it more.

Taking into account not only their body of work but also their great influence and impact on the industry in particular and the public in general, plus of course their longevity in their profession, there are a few others who should be so honored. That’s not to say that Vilma Santos and Nora Aunor don’t deserve it because they do. But it’s not their time yet.

Name three?

One, Eddie Garcia who is an icon who has proven himself in all genres and who has been leading a life both as an artist and as a person devoid of any scandal (he hasn’t been charged for even the slightest offense such as traffic violation, has he?). Eddie is on the same level as those who have been accorded the honor, such as Eddie Romero and Lino Brocka. (FPJ was named National Artist but as far as I know, the honor hasn’t been acknowledged by his family because it was perceived to have been granted by an administration “hostile” to them trying to appease them.)

Two, Rosa Rosal who has amply shown her mettle not only on the screen but also, more so, off it in her capacity as head of the Red Cross. She has distinguished herself on two fronts — as an entertainer and as a public servant. I’m sure the public knows her track record on both fields.

Three, but of course, there’s Dolphy the eternal King of Comedy whose contribution to the industry is beyond reproach. As in the cases of Eddie and Rosa, Dolphy is an artist par excellence. In fact, he has become a brand. Say comedy and what name comes to mind? Dolphy! In fact, Sen. Manny Villar has been moving heaven and earth to have Dolphy given the honor, long before another congressman came up with the proposal in favor of Nora…and yet another one for Vilma. But the congressmen are, so to speak, barking at the wrong tree because it’s neither the Legislative Department nor the Executive Department that’s in-charge of screening the nominees but two duly-authorized agencies, The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Again, before Vilma and Nora, and even before Eddie and Rosa, I second Sen. Villar’s motion to first declare Dolphy a National Artist, considering the Comedy King’s present condition. The honoree should be given the pleasure to savor the honor while he’s still around, don’t you think?

Even Vilma agreed.

Asked by Funfare about her opinion, Vilma texted back , “Okay, of course! I’m 200 percent in favor of Dolphy. He deserves the recognition. It’s long overdue.”

There you are.

In the meantime, the Vilma-Nora rivalry should be swept back to where it has been — in memory.

tua na lagi... sukad karon, kada tuig, naa nay lalis kun kinsay national artist sa mga artista.  kay ngano laging apil-apilon pa man ning mga artista ani.  moabot ang panahon, si kris aquino mahimong national artist.  sundan dayon ni ara mina, annabelle rama, ruffa gutierrez, etc.  with a little imagination in their defense, mahimo ni silang greats tanan baya.

ex.:  ara mina: no other actress with such boobs dared to fight for her reputation by filing a case against her half-sister and fellow artist cristine reyes.

kris aquino: in the annals of philippine cinema, she's the unbeatable drama queen, with a real love life that can beat her reel love life to smithereens; besides, is there any other actress who can be dubbed as "the presidential sister"?  ;D

but goodness gracious!  our legislators are discussing about awards for local actors?  i don't get it.  aiming for media mileage again?  (they're getting it, obviously.)  this is crazier than the proposal of one congressman of ours to change the name of EDSA.

let's think u.s. for a moment here, uh-huh... imagine nancy pelosi proposing in a bill to give an award to jennifer lopez because, by jove, she's a cultural icon and her butt is a brand.  think butt, and jennifer lopez comes to mind; never mind contenders like beyonce and kim kardashian...

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. tua na lagi.  di unta mautingkay ang mga baho kun wa na lang ni sila angina.  sa pag-declare bitaw nga national artist si lucrecia urtula (ever heard of her?), wa gyoy nireklamo.

personally, mohapa ko ni urtula.  if there's anyone to be credited for interpreting the singkil into what it is now, it is her.  (the basis for singkil is said to be a 3-day wedding ceremony of our muslim kin in mindanao.  urtula knew and was sensitive to arts and culture enough to interpret it into a 6-minute dance.  she attended the whole 3-day affair to take it all in.  that's artist for you.  whew!)

we knew each other, honest pa (through her daughter and the folk arts theater).  super sa ka maldits siya, may she rest in peace.  iya kong gibiay-biayan kausa when she saw me in sinulog costume.  arang ka-fake kuno.  sows, toytoy ra god ko, way ikasukol except to say that "hey, i didn't design this costume!"  ugh.
