Relationship Between the Fatty Streak and the Fibrous PlaqueThe fatty streak is the earliest identifiable lesion of atherosclerosis. It has been detected in children as young as 10 years of age and consists of lipid-laden macrophages overlying lipid-laden smooth muscle cells. They occur at the same anatomic sites as subsequent fibrous plaques. McGill demonstrated that increased surface involvement of fatty streaks precedes development of fibrous plaques, further supporting a precursor role for the fatty streak.
