The time I met Dr. Updike, I was still unsure of whether to go into Medicine or not. In fact, I was scared and 'feared' the fact that it would take so much time to finish. He reassured me with his very hospitable, and encouraging words, "A seed one day will become a big tree in the future.."
Our meeting , which was supposed to be medical (and it was to an extent, as i did ask questions about the basis of Gastroenterology; Nephrology; Internal Medicine etc), turned into a encouraging philosophical talk.
Let's just say that after my interim with him, I was resolved to follow in his footsteps. To me, he was not a strict physician who was Chief of Gastroenterology, but a man who was caring towards his patients, stern and obligatory to his medical student interns and cooperative with the nurses under him.
His voice is very smooth and his character is very inviting and passionate towards patient and staff. He is a fine physician.
