Reaction to SWS Third Quarter Survey:
15-POINT RATINGS DROP CAN TURN AROUND IN WEEKS
Public opinion is quite a malleable, clay dough-like easily shaped by twists and turns in current events.
Yes, recent weeks' developments have not been generally favorable to President Rodrigo Duterte, but his base of support remains solid, in my view. The 16 million who voted for him in May 2016, I believe are still there.
Factoring in the margin of error of 2.5 percentage points, that 15.5-point shedding is a chunk, but far from an existential crisis or even being worrisome.
A few or several remedial measures here and there on the crime and peace and order front can result in recovery of those lost points. The end of the Battle for Marawi is on the horizon, more Duterte points there.
The crime front may have been less than rosy but economic figures have been favorable as can be clearly seen in developments in the stock market, remittances from overseas Filipinos, and the roll out of the administration's infrastructure and social services spending. Other economic indicators are quite seasonal so no worries there.
Many bills are nearing enactment into law in the following weeks, so news about that will certainly boost President Duterte's ratings.
