Telum Talks to... Gwen Llana Serrano, Freelance Contributor, The Asian Parent & Blogger, Blissful Blooming

How did you start your career in journalism?
In college, I took up Communication Arts and joined the University of Sto. Tomas' cable television, TOMCAT, as an extra curricular activity. That was my first exposure to journalism. After graduation, I started my career as a researcher for a news magazine program at GMA Network.

Why are you a Journalist?
Writing has always been my passion. Thus, I chose a career path that would allow me to put my passion to good use. I can't think of any other career that can achieve that.

How do you balance writing freelance, blogging, your day job, and being a mother?
It's tough, but setting priorities and trying to be disciplined help me a lot to juggle these responsibilities. It also helps that writing, blogging, my current work (which is marketing), and motherhood are all my passion. I am happy doing all of them.

What does a day in your life look like, from the time you wake up to the time you get back to bed?
During weekdays, I wake up really early, at 5am. I send my baby to her grandparents, then go straight to my full time job. My work starts at 7am and ends at 4pm. After 4pm, I transform into my Freelancer / Blogger self. I write blog posts, respond to emails, or write for a freelance project.  In the evening, I go back to my baby and be the best mom I can be.

During weekends, I try as much as possible not to work so I can spend time with family. But in rare cases, I dedicate a few hours on weekends to do freelance writing or attend events for Bloggers.

Most memorable journalism moment?
My most memorable journalism moment happened when I was a Researcher for a news magazine show in GMA Network. We had to document how young boys in Tondo stole copper wires in the wee hours of the morning.

What kind of stories excite you?
Nowadays, I look forward to stories on parenting, motherhood, children, and family.

Coffee, lunch or drinks?
Coffee (I love frappucinos) or lunch.

How would you prefer to be contacted?
Via email.

What can PRs do to make your life easier?
PRs can send event notices at least two weeks in advance.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Teleportation. Journalists need that in the Philippines so we can cover events on time despite heavy traffic.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
