OPENING STATEMENT FOR PRESSCON 2 (ERIA)
DOE Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi
1st East Asia Energy Forum
9 August 2017
Be Grand Hotel, Bohol, Philippines
To the delegates of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue, particularly the officers and members of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), and of course our ever-supportive friends from the media, thank you for gracing this Press Conference for the 1st East Asia Energy Forum. This is an associated meeting organized under the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD).
Earlier today, I opened the Forum and it’s currently ongoing, tackling the significance of conventional energy and the entire oil industry to the Asian economies.
With the Philippine direction towards energy neutrality, we cannot--at the moment-- disregard the inclusion of conventional energy in our energy mix, particularly natural gas. They serve as an important role in our daily lives regardless of the issues and concerns arising from them and that we also keep on addressing and resolving.
Thankfully, we have neighboring countries who are willing to set a regional direction on conventional energy as we continue to depend on them for the ASEAN and East Asia economies’ industrialization and further growth.
Along with our friendly neighbors from ASEAN and East Asia, our main thrust in this forum is the development of appropriate strategies and innovative solutions not only to our energy challenges but also on energy security threats.
With all that being said, I hope that the media will serve as the bridge between us, the policymakers, and the larger public. You are a vital institution in realizing the vision for the full development of the country and the Asian regions.
Mabuhay and good afternoon!
