SP extends 20% discount of property tax to February 28

CAPITOL – Here’s good news for property tax payers.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Bohol has approved Resolution No. 2009-006, granting extension of the cut-off date to avail of 20% discount in the payment of property tax from January 20 to February 28, 2009, said Vice-Gov. Julius Caesar Herrera, who banged the gavel for its approval during the regular session of the SP he presided over last week.

Board Member Bienvenido Molina, Jr., chair of the ways and means committee, pointed out that the move was meant to give ample time for taxpayers to settle their obligations and for enough time to collect these taxes.

Molina, the main sponsor of the measure, said that the extension covers the entire province of Bohol for this year (2009) only.

This also came after some municipalities passed Resolutions requesting the provincial government for the deadline extension.

The approval was also a concrete response to the clamor considering that property tax has been adjusted based on the amended Provincial Revenue Code.

Meanwhile, taxes on what the province considers as idle lands have yet to be determined since this is still under a careful study.

Considered idle lands are those which are agricultural, “more than one hectare in area, suitable use, one-half of which remain unutilized or unimproved by the owner of the property or person having legal interest therein,” the revenue code provides.

Also included as idle land are those having more than a 1,000 square meters that half of which remain undeveloped or unutilized by the owner having legal interest therein.

Excluded as an idle land is agricultural planted with perennial crops with at least 50 trees under article C, section 2C.02 of the said Code. (RVO)
