SK Under Attack
« on: August 05, 2007, 10:41:56 AM »
By Ric Obedencio

Some vocal vice-governors unleashed a torrent of sharp criticisms against the SK but some of their members came in rescue.

In Bohol for instance, some, if not most of, SK municipal federated presidents find a difficult situation in balancing their duties to study, families and to the SK. But most of the time the latter is sacrificed.

Antique Vice-Gov. Rhodora Cadiao bluntly told the assembly that the traditional politicians, without naming names, have corrupted the youth leaders. She said in her province, a lot of youth already learned how to sell their votes and adopting ways of traditional politics., She asked the body to consider what is happening in Antique prior to making a stand on whether to abolish SK or not.

Aklan Vice-Gov. Gabrielle admitted that the SK is “too politicized now” and proposed for what she called “re-engineering or reinforcing the SK” but it has to have a basis or somewhat evaluation on how the youth performed.

Pangasinan Vice-Gov. Marlyn Premecias-Agabas said that the real problem of the SK is the “age limit.” Agabas has studied and presented as masteral dissertation of the SK of Pangasinan at the National College of Defense. She is in favor of creating a committee for study or evaluation of the SK.

One of the league’s young turks Ramil Hernandez of Laguna, who is an SK prior to his being elected vice-governor, said that “we cannot be vice-governor if we are not SK.” He said that in his province a lot of SK became barangay and municipal officials. Being an SK, he said, “is a good opportunity for us to have an equal opportunity in our government. It is a training ground.”

Surigao del Sur Vice-Gov. Librado Navarro said that it is “premature” for the LVGP to make a stand on the abolition of SK. He reminded his colleagues what Davis Colins of the United Nations for Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said on the rights of the children to be informed and to participate. Colins was the guest speaker during the league’s first day of the Assembly.

The Assembly later approved a Resolution calling for a review and study of the SK. But it was not clear who compose the group for a study that would be the basis of the league’s stand urging Congress to whether to abolish or not the SK.

After such passage of the Resolution to study SK’s performance, Suplico moved for passage of a separate Resolution urging Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to suspend all “useless” activities of the SK, such as search for Miss Gay and others. But after he was prodded upon by his colleagues, he withdrew it until the proposed study-evaluation is completed.

It would be great if we could hear from the National Youth Commission on its position regarding the SK. Paging Commissioner Benjie Oliva (who is a Boholano, btw).
