The registration of new voters for the synchronized barangay and sangguniang kabataan (SK) elections scheduled on October 29 starts today until Sunday next week in all offices of the Comelec in the province.

Listing of new voters will push through despite efforts by some congressmen to postpone the barangay and SK elections due to budgetary constraints after the holding of the last synchronized midterm elections for local and national officials.

Provincial Election Supervisor Atty. Veronico Petalcorin told the Chronicle that under RA 9164, the Comelec is mandated to hold the barangay and SK elections.

In the absence of amendments to the law, the barangay and SK polls will push through on October 29, Petalcorin said.
          
The Comelec will accept new registrants, transferees and those who want to apply for reactivation after failing to participate in the last two electoral exercises.

Comelec offices are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., said Provincial Election Assistant Bella Decasa in a separate interview.

The 8-day registration will be for sangguniang kabataan electors, aged 15 years old and those below 18 years old before October 29.

Those who are already 18 years old will have to register as regular voters, according to Decasa.

Registrants are required to present a copy of their birth certificate, school records or any document that would establish their identity. - July 15, 2007
