Oppus: On Education and Health
« on: April 30, 2007, 01:42:50 PM »
ANNE Mariquit “Kit” Derikito-Oppus underscored that health and education of Tagbilaranons and women concerns will be on top priority of her legislative agenda to sustain the city residents’ health that will redound to a healthy community.

Oppus, who is running for councilor under the ruling party, also emphasized that values formation, support for teachers’ training and support for parents teachers associations (PTA) should be first and foremost to correct the critical under-provision of these needs, or the lack of it.

One of the crises the city is facing is not much on poverty but in the social well being of the residents and providing health and education is the answer, she said. And the logistical provisions of these needs should be massive and sustainable to create an atmosphere of a healthy environment. And the only way to make this is through legislative measures that would allocate a hefty budget in the City Council where she is seeking a seat in May 14 elections, she said.

Oppus said that values formation must be taught in all subjects including math and science and support for training of teachers must be pursued since they exercise substitute parental authority. Strengthening of PTAs in the city as partners of nurturing the children is also essential.

Oppus, the wife of former city police chief Louie Oppus, also expressed concern over the plight of women. She said, once elected, she will craft a legislative measure providing livelihood opportunities, education and health care for women. Oppus said that regular consultations or ‘pulong-pulong’ on issues, such as domestic violence among women is also high in her legislative agenda and support for women in distress and the Bohol Crisis Intervention Center (BCIC) which is based in the city.

Health care services include strengthening the Barangay Day Care Centers, assuring them of sustained support such as logistics that may be derived from the Gender and Development (GAD) fund in the annual budget.

She also plans to initiate the launching of mass feeding program for school kids by introducing community milk feeding program in cooperation with the National Dairy Authority, the barangays health centers, the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Department of Health (DOH).
