Commentary: PGMA leads national campaign for energy conservation
by Cecil Cadorna
Koronadal City (30 August 2005) -- A hands-on President as she has always been all along, President Gloria-Macapagal arroyo is leading the nation in her call for every Filipino to close ranks and actively involve in the nationwide campaign to conserve energy.

The President call came at a time when global concern on the effects of unstable movement of crude oil prices in the world market starts to snowball.

This week, President arroyo went live on national televisions to prod every Filipino to reduce energy consumption while at the same time introduce the new members of the Energy Audit Team tasked to monitor and carry out the implementation of the conservation measures.

The Department of Energy came out with its proposed energy conservation measures that aims to decrease the country’s fuel consumption. It says that the recommended measures are expected to cut the country’s fuel consumption by 1.34 million barrels of fuel which is equivalent to 41 billion per year.

In their recommended measures the energy department proposed the following pointers.

Setting the temperature levels of air conditioning at 25 degrees.
Use neon signs only from 9PM to 1PM
Reducing mall hours by an hour a day. It will cut the country’s fuel requirements by 49 million barrels of fuel oil equivalent per year, resulting in corresponding savings of 149,000 barrels of fuel oil equivalent to P450.8 M.
Limit the operating hours of gasoline stations
Boosting the import tariff on guzzlers
Strict implementation of speed limit of 80 km/hour on highways.
Banning night golf
Interacting power capacitors to government buildings
Conducting an audit of commercial and industrial buildings
Enhancing the implementation of energy efficiency program across all sectors.
All government agencies, state-run corporations and universities are expected to implement a gas rationing scheme to enable them to reduce their monthly fuel consumption by 10% while all government vehicles would be restricted to essential activities and weekend travel would be banned.

It is likewise proposed that the Visayas and Mindanao will have uninterrupted power supply and all will be required to implement measures that will enable them to achieve 10% reduction in electricity consumption.

We all hope to see good results as we begin to set aside comfort in our lifestyle and take heed of the needs of our time. This is reality and cannot be taken for granted.

Every Filipino has to share personal sacrifices for the sake of our country’s survival or sink together in proverbial ship we all are board. Shall we bite the bullet? (PIA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
