‘Hindi mo ba ako kilala?’

By Raul V. Fabella

IN ACCORDANCE with the rules promulgated by the Dasmariñas Village Association (DVA) that no exit be allowed at that gate after 10 p.m. which everyone follows, the blue guards refuse to raise the boom for the four-vehicle convoy of mayor Binay of Makati, reportedly also ferrying a senator Binay of the same family.

"Hindi mo ba ako kilala?" (Don’t you know who I am?) was the threat issued and bodyguards brandished firearms to drive home the point.

A cellphone call by the capo and foot rugs also known as Makati police arrived to arrest the blue guards and detain them for four hours.

How can this be true? Can the CCTV camera be politically motivated? If you haven’t had a heart attack by now but want to experience everything once, read on.

First, the security agency, Right Eight Security, employers of the blue guards, issued a statement of apology to the mayor! And forced the guards to apologize! For what??? For lapses of procedure such as dutifully enforcing rules they are supposed to enforce! Subtext 1: Rules are enforced only for the lowly but not for the high and mighty thugs, or, to paraphrase George Orwell in Animal Farm: "All animals are equal but pigs are more equal than others." Subtext 2: All businesses in Makati doing business with us can be pressured to disengage. So we lick.

Second, the Dasmariňas Village Association president Mr. Pantanga confirmed the incident but can only say that this "... has already been settled."

The police chief said that the arrest and detention was for verification purposes. The DVA showed singular capacity for grovelling before the Binays by keeping mum about the affair.

And we have still to hear from Dasma residents, perhaps because the incident was so well covered up or worse. It is, after all, their rules; they should stand by them and by those who stood up to enforce them. Everyone was cowed to silence!

The blue guards who stood up to the Binays to enforce the rules are real heroes in my book. They could have been shot and killed right there but they stood fast. And yet they got the raw end of the deal. I would not be surprised if firing them was not demanded of the security agency. Will Dasma residents turn their backs on these heroes?

Contrast this: When the board of directors of one subdivision along Commonwealth, QC, decided to fire a security guard for reporting the loss of subdivision property and finding the same in the possession of a prominent board member, the residents rose up in collective anger and forced the board to rescind its order.

When the said board member concerned sued the guard for forcible entry, one resident executed an affidavit that said there was no forcible entry and another resident, a lawyer, took up the guard’s case pro bono. Bravo!

But such episodes of celebrating true heroism is all too uncommon. The sad fate of the country is that heroism by small fry gets punished; thuggery by powerful vermin earns them public office. And a proposed exemption from income taxes!

This Christmas I plan to focus on little heroes and the hope they bring, instead of on the gremlins who steal our hopes. Join me if you are so inclined in hailing the two guards (still to be named) who stood their ground and the whistleblower who outed the tapes as heroes of the land. They remind us that there is hope for this country despite how many times thugs have stolen hope. They give us a glimpse of the grim future we have to avoid. If more people acted like the two guards, this country would be far ahead.

Let me leave you with one thought.

When you are young, Christmas just magically happens to you. The cool Siberian air, the overcast clouds, and the snippets of carols afford us, without us raising a finger, a transport to the outer reaches of gladness. But as we grow older and more exposed to the tragedies and cruelties in the human condition like the Dasma thuggery, Christmas magic does not just arrive; it gets stolen by the gremlins. The magic comes empty-handed. But we can still touch the high sierras of gladness; we can make Christmas happen. We make Christmas happen by acts of caring and generosity. But everything is in vain without justice.

MANILA, Philippines—Television host and Inquirer columnist Solita “Winnie” Collas-Monsod on Thursday said Makati Mayor Junjun Binay was “taking advantage of his position” when he ordered the arrest of three security guards of Dasmariñas Village, Makati City.

Monsod, a resident of the village, said: “The guards were correct… And Mayor Binay was obviously wrong. He was taking advantage of his position and trying to be above the law. And anything that goes above the law is wrong.”

Monsod told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview that she was familiar with the policy of the village restricting access to one of the main gates after 10 p.m.

“His alternative was to go about 150 meters away to the gate that was open. But he wanted to show his…I don’t know,” Monsod said.

“And the fact that his guards pulled out their weapons is…this is an indication of how Binay is going to rule the country,” she added. -- http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/549261/winnie-monsod-guards-were-correct-binay-was-wrong#ixzz2o1jMKbxA

What a truly stupid moron this binay is to think he is any higher than honest security guards doing their job. This binay is acting like as if he's the dark lord sauron from the lord of the rings trilogy. dark, perhaps. but a lord? nah. don't think so. :P

heaven forbid.  yet it looks like binay senior is going to make it because he's more politically astute and is better at political organization than mar roxas.  i can't believe that the philippines deserves this family as political leaders, all at one time. :(

binay senior - current vice-president
binay wife - former congresswoman and mayor
binay junior - makati city mayor who gave cars to all barangay captains
binay daughter 1 - congresswoman, senior majority leader
binay daughter 2 - senator

let's see if our legislators are sane enough to push through with the proposed law against dynasties to save the country from this kind of arrogance.

The Binays of Makati

By Ramon Tulfo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Friday, December 20th, 2013

MANILA, Philippines – A mango tree doesn’t bear a santol fruit.

Let’s not be surprised that Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay and his sister, Sen. Nancy Binay, acted the way they did when they were prevented by guards at the posh Dasmariñas Village from using a gate of the subdivision.

In 1986 when their father, Jejomar Binay, was still officer in charge of Makati, he ordered the closure of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) clubhouse for refusing to let his children use the club’s swimming pool because they were not accompanied by a member.

I was a witness to the elder Binay’s abusive behavior. I couldn’t use the club gym at that time because of the closure.

The three guards who didn’t raise the gate’s barrier to allow the Binays’ convoy to pass through were arrested by Makati policemen and detained for four hours. The Binay camp, however, said the guards voluntarily went to police headquarters.

The two children of Vice President Binay, Jun and Nancy, said the report on the incident was blown out of proportion by the Inquirer.

This, despite a 24-minute video of the incident.

The Binays not only want to show who’s the boss; they’re also not truthful.

The Binays, the epitome of a political dynasty, think they own Makati City because of their power and influence.

The father is vice president of the Republic; and the children are senator, mayor and congresswoman.

The mother used to be mayor who temporarily manned the fort for her husband when his three consecutive terms expired.

If you go around the city, you’ll find the letter “B”—with a tail—painted on walls in public places.

The “B” sign, which looks like a brand on cattle, stands for Binay, of course.

Mayor Junjun goes around with a convoy of police bodyguards apparently to show that he’s the city’s boss.

The incident at the Dasmariñas Village was not the first time the mayor bared his fangs.

In the Dasmariñas incident, Junjun Binay was quoted by a source as saying to the guards, “Kilala ba ninyo ako? (Do you know me)?”

In another incident that took place at Rockwell Mall basement parking early this year, the younger Binay allegedly figured in an altercation with an Israeli whose car got ahead of his car in an empty parking slot.

During a heated exchange of words between Binay and the Israeli, the mayor allegedly blurted out to the foreigner, “Don’t you know me? I own this city.”

The Israeli left the country months later.

hey, your honor mr vice-president, let your son earn such courtesy.  being mayor does not exempt him from rules.  educate him with some basic manners, so at least he can give the impression that he comes from a "buena familia", not from, uhm, where you once were, with apologies.

imagine the appreciation he would have gotten if he did a hilario davide III, the current governor of cebu and son of former chief justice and philippine ambassador to the UN hilario davide jr...

Something funny happened on Gov. Junjun’s Davide’s way to Regional Trial Court Judge Bing Saniel’s office the other day. The guard at the Palace of Justice’s only open door failed to recognize him and refused him entry.

The governor’s innate good nature did not allow the incident to affect him. While others would have bullied their way through (“I am the governor, how dare you don’t recognize me!), Davide quietly retreated to the Capitol canteen, where he should by now be a familiar sight, and had his coffee there.

That’s character for you.

I have personally witnessed only two other public officials act the way Junjun did under similar circumstances. One was then governor and Malacañang executive committee vice chairman Eddie Gullas at the Sheraton Hotel in 1981. The other was the late vice governor Sal Fernandez at the gate of the Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corporation in 1973.

May their tribe increase.
