First District Representative Edgar Chatto has been re-elected chairman of the Committee on Tourism, one of the most-sought-after posts in the 14th Congress.

Chatto had served in the same committee as chairman during the stint of the 13th Congress and as the committee senior vice-chairman in the 12th.

Chatto's camp considers the congressman's re-election as a recognition of his competence and performance.

The House of Representatives continued the reorganization process on the night of July 31 wherein chairpersons of 17 committees were elected.

The tourism industry is one of the sectors that have the potential of boosting the country's economy as cited in the Philippine Medium Term Development Plan.

It can be a powerful economic growth engine for the country, if its sustainability is developed properly.

In an interview with the media, Chatto said tourism must benefit the people through the jobs and livelihood it entails as a vehicle for poverty alleviation.

"Sustainable tourism must be the goal even as we target higher tourist arrivals with better infrastructures in place. Investments in tourism-related industries must be promoted, including a strong balance of agricultural development and environmental heritage preservation," Chatto stressed.

Other congressmen elected to different top committee posts last Tuesday included Pampanga Rep Juan Miguel Arroyo (Energy); Negros Occidental Rep Ignacio Arroyo (Natural Resources), Misamis Occidental Rep Herminia Ramiro (Accounts), Antique Rep Exequiel Javier (Ways and Means), Palawan Rep Abraham Mitra (Agriculture and Food), Ilocos Norte Roquito Ablan (Dangerous Drugs), Nueva Ecija Rep Rodolfo Antonino (Public Order), South Cotabato Rep Arthur Pingoy (Health), Catanduanes Rep Joseph Santiago (Information and Communications Technology), Palawan Rep Antonio Alvarez (Trade and Industry), Makati Rep Teodoro Locsin (Suffrage ), Cebu Rep Antonio Cuenco (Foreign Affairs), Bulacan Rep Lorna Silverio (Inter Parliamentary Relations), Manila Rep Bienvenido Abante (Public Information), Baguio Rep Mauricio Domogan (House Electoral Tribunal), Davao Rep Prospero Nograles (Commission on Appointments ), and Iloilo Rep Arthur Defensor ( Rules Majority Floor Leader).
