Kinaiyahan Festival in Dauin, Negros Oriental

Another variety of black beans called “tabios” that is commonly grown and produced in the municipality of Dauin, Negros Oriental is now being pushed as one of the highlights in the celebration of Kinaiyahan Festival of the said town.

Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) President Dr. Henry Sojor who was the guest speaker during the event, emphasized on the importance of the local variety of “tabios” and moringa or malunggay since these are widely produced in the town.

He said moringa has been identified as the miracle vegetable of the world that has been developed into capsules, tea, and herbal medicine.

He said “tabios” is one of the common dishes served during fiesta celebrations in Dauin. It is best served when cooked with pork fat. During some occasions it is also served with coconut milk paired with grilled dried fish and steamed corn grits.

Dr. Sojor challenged the local officials of Dauin and the trainers to include in their presentation the importance, qualities and impact of local black beans or “tabios” and moringa in the culture, history and economy of Dauin.

The state university president who also hails from Dauin further said that black beans or “tabios” and moringa production are among the common sources of livelihood of the people in the community aside from fishing.

Dauin held its 7th year Kinaiyahan Festival celebration in honor of their patron Saint Nicholas de Tolentino. - PNA
