No venereal disease existed in Bohol in 1900
« on: September 01, 2007, 08:56:53 AM »
An excerpt from Engr. Jes Tirol's column in the Bohol Chronicle:

My Neighbor column, Obiter Dictum (Remark in passing; comment) says that prostitution is the oldest profession. Be that as it may, yet it is strange that I have not found an old Bisayan word for prostitute.

The word p**t is a Spanish word. It means therefore, that prostitution was a profession, industry, or trade that was not prevalent in Bohol in olden days. No word was coined to refer to it.

In fact Capt. C.L. Furbush, the medical officer of the invading Americans in 1900, said that no venereal disease existed in Bohol. It is a euphemism that there were no prostitutes in Bohol when the Americans landed in Bohol on March 17, 1900.
