Mackerel or mangko had become scarce in Bohol

An old saying that necessity is the mother of invention proved true to the local fishermen. The mackerel or mangko had become scarce in the Bohol Sea particularly the blue sea fishing grounds fronting Jagna. It may because of global warming that forced them to seek cooler waters or it may be over fishing or it may also be that there a dearth of food supply for these fishes.

A few schools of mangko that are left are so wary. They must have undergone a recognition seminar to distinguish artificial fly bait from the real McCoy that only a few would grab the lures of a one-time fisherman. Perhaps only extreme hunger will dull their sense of recognition. They also learn to avoid the drift nets strung along their path. Only panic caused by the presence of predators would make them blunder into the nets.

Some fishermen discovered that when using nets dyed brown like the color of the sargasso weeds they would catch a few. However, the nets of that color, which carry the Aguinaldo or Pamo brand are more expensive so they use nylon nets.

These nets are white and it stands out when strung in the path of the mangko.

These fishes, survivors of previous fishing encounters, had learned their lesson.

They do not rush into the net if left undisturbed. They must be shooed in otherwise they will just swim along the net until it reaches the ends and continue their journey.

Some fishermen colored their nets blue to simulate the color of seawater.

However, the marine blue color will stand out when the nets are strung a few meters below the surface. Then they dyed their nets light green and it blended nicely with the sea. The mangko tried to swim through and were caught. Some fishermen scoffed at the idea but a demonstration was made string uncolored nets together with the colored. More fish were caught with the colored thus starting the net coloring practice.

Another fishing technique that had undergone changes is the squid fishing. In the past, the squid, calamari locally known as nukos were caught snagged with multiple hooks baited with slivers of raw fish. The weak flare of the anugot or dried coconut petiole or moron a kerosene torch was used to lure those deep-water residents to the surface toward the bait. Some fishermen experimented with squid baits and found that the "stocking" lured more squid than baits of fish slivers.

However, the stoking or sock, a king of footwear, has to be filled with human feces and naturally unsanitary that nobody would buy from a fisherman with large catch of squids even if he does not use it.

Then some wise guy invented the borloloy. One observed that squids are attracted to the surface by blinking lights like the Christmas light. However, the flashing light must be kept a few feet beneath the surface so the fisherman fashioned a borloloy a flashing light device, powered by a single flashlight battery and waterproofed. The contraption was so successful that squid became the permanent commodity in the Jagna fish stalls.

Some Duero fishermen were able to supply Jagna market with large squids. These mollusks as all squids belong to that class are a meter long and weigh several kilos each. They live in depths greater that the calamari environs. Their flesh is not tough and tastier, approximating that of the shallow water nukos, which is naturally white. They are fished with snagging hooks, which look like grapplers because of their strength and size and baited with bangos. The Jagna prices are quite competitive but supply dried out. Either the Duero fishermen had ceased squid operations or the supply had become scarce.
