Hydraulic water ram The Pump of the Future
by Eric J. Lyne
December 30, 2006 - Sunday Post - GOOD Morning to you all in Bohol , well I hope your Christmas Celebrations went well, Its hard to believe that another year has passed but it has and we start a new one tomorrow. Let say this prayer together, father we surrender this past year and give it to you. We give you our failures, our regrets and our disappointments, for we have no more use for them. Make us new people, forgetting what lies behind and pressing on towards that, which lie ahead of us. We give you all our hopes and dreams for the future. Purify them by your spirit so that your will for us. As we stand on the threshold of another year, encourage us by our successes of the past, challenged us by the by the power of your word, and guide us by the presence of your Holy Spirit. With confidence in God, we can look back and look ahead, then walk boldly into a New Year.
Forgive Us Lord, For Failures Past, Then Help Us Start A New, With strange and Courage to Obey, And Closely Follow You, The Victories of The Past, Give Courage for the Future.
Our topic—A hydraulic water ram is the device that uses the movement of water through a drive pipe to pump a portion of this water to a location much higher in elevation than the site of the ram and the source of water. It has no engine requires no electricity or solar power or windmills. It has the unique ability of pumping water up hill using the water itself as a power source. Friends this is not the duke or wishful thinking, it is a fact, believe me, I know the only moving parts are two valve's in operation, water flows from the source dawn a “Drive Pipe” to the Ram. The sources can be a spring, waterfall, fast flowing river, dam on each cycle, A valve closes causing the water in the “Drive Pipe” to suddenly stop, this creates a “water –hammer “ effect and high pressure at the ram. This pressure is utilized to force a small amount of water through a one way valve into the delivery pipe and the cycle starts over. In effect, the ram use's the energy in a large amount of water falling a short distance to lift a small amount of water a great distance. With good design, the ram is a highly efficient device when panning your hydraulic ram installation, you will need to know certain factor. 1.The vertical falls in feet of the drive head of water; 2.The vertical height to which water must be pumped; 3.The length of the drive pipe, 4.The length of the delivery pipe; 5.( critical) The quantity of water available to operate the ram. Depending on the size of the hydraulic, ram, you must be able to supply up to 8 gallons per minute for 2 inch. Ram. 6.The quantity of water needs to be supplied per day. The size of the hydraulic ram to be installed depends on how much water is available and how much you need.
I stated earlier that for a 2-inch ram you would need 8 gallons per minute. Let me clarify that statement, a size of ram be chosen were this figure (8 gallon per minute) is equal or less than the amount of water available. Any system or spring providing a minimum flow of 8 gallons of water per minute can be used to power hydraulic ram, The more water available, the bigger the hydraulic ram, and the higher the water can be pumped. The amount of available water in a stream or river should be measured at the time when the water supply is at its lowest, at its minimum rates of flow. To check this, construct a small dam of weir across the stream and conduct the overflow by pipe into a 55-gallon drum. Time the filling of the drum, then divide by the number of minutes required per filling. The answer is the rate of flow available, water in gallons per minute. The available water determines the sized of ram that can be used. The places were this type of pump can be used, has many advantages over other pumped powered by hand, animals, wind, engines or electricity, despite the fact that a lot of water passes through it without being pumped, but it must be remembered, it does not need an additional power source, which means there are no running costs, there are only two moving parts and these are very simple and cheap to maintain, it works efficiently over a wide range of flows, provided it is tune correctly. The ram must be located below the source of water. Minimum vertical fall from dive-pipe inlet to ram is 2 feet. But the best performance is achieved of course, with a greater evaluation. The length of drive-pipe should be four times the length of the vertical fall. This type of pumped has many natural advantage over its rivals a.) Cost for operation, b.) Operate unattended, c.) Minimum maintenance d.) Virtually lifetime service, e.) Simple installation, f.) No fuel or electricity required, g.)Simple and adaptable, and don't forget it operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year on only water! Can any one beat that.
