Hundreds of Bohol Tarsiers Gone?
« on: January 18, 2009, 11:42:11 AM »
Bohol lost almost one-third of the estimated tarsier population in the past ten years, according to a research by experts that include the National Geographic Society.

Director Dioscoro Melana of the Protected Area Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENBR) in Central Visayas said the move of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) against the capture of tarsiers from the wilds and their display for commercial use is on right track.

Quoting the expert studies in his powerpoint presentation during a committee hearing at the Capitol, Provincial Board Member Alfonso Damalerio II said tarsiers were estimated to number 1,000 in 1991.

A decade later or in 2001, the population of Bohol’s eco-tourism icon believed to be already 45 million in existence dwindled to 700 more or less.

The trend can render the tarsiers extinct in the next 20 years, Damalerio expressed.
Melana, himself present in the SP environment committee hearing headed by Damalerio, assured to support the move banning the capture of tarsiers and their commercial display by enterprising tourism outlets, primarily those in Loboc.

The committee gathered inputs vital to the enactment of a provincial ordinance towards this end.
The proposed ordinance is enough bases to reject all future applications to domesticate tarsiers purposely for leisure and fees from viewers who are mostly tourists and visitors.

The present system does not require a clearance from the provincial environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), whose head Nestor Canda also appeared to Damalerio’s committee, when applying for DENR Regional Office permit for the captive breeding of tarsier.

The intent of the permit is good, but the blatant display of the primate for commercial viewing mocks the very purpose of the license from the DENR, according to other eco-tourism stakeholders attending the committee hearing.

Even some existing laws and special issuances was blamed for the permitted capture and domestication of tarsiers. - source: The Bohol Chronicle

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

I don't  beleive that hundreds of tarsiers are gone. According to residents, many tarseirs escaped from the foundation .

It is just naive for local government officials to allow entrepreneurs to operate tarsier viewing establishments so that tourists can see these rare and endangered nucturnal animals even at day time.

One permit that DENR granted was for a tarsier breeding in captivity program, and mind you, not for endangering the tarsier's lives by making them available for day time tourists.

One tarsier stop even allows tourists to feed the tarsiers by putting in crickets on midribs and rubbing these insects on the nose of the sleeping marsupials.

This is not counting a tarsier stop that still allows tourists to handle the poor creatures.

Nobody really could tell how many tarsiers have died in these establishments. The operators say none. But by the abuse the tarsiers get, i wont be surprised if the turn-over is a dead tarsier a day.

And because Loboc saw that the tarsier establishments are racking in donations, they effected the tarsier toll fee so at least the town can get it all.

Accordingly, it was done in the guise of earning money so the LGU can put up tarsier protection funds.

In an area where the same LGU put in those gigantic lights to create a magical night cruise which has undeniably disturbed the tarsier feeding, the LGU still have the gall to tell that the P50 toll fee goes to tarsier protection?

Oh, come on, you can do better than that!

Therefore , dili makagawas sa Bohol.

For 45 million years, they have been existing in this reason, let us not be the reason for their extinction...

well, at least they control the population of cockroaches.. cockroaches are below tarsiers in the food chain/web...

Dili man makaon ang tarseir.

Kinsa may nakatilaw
ug karneng tarseir?  Kon duna may manakok ila gyud na nga buhion , for pet.

nganong panghuntingon man ning mga tarsier? unsa may ilang rason ani, gawas nga ipang-hanyag sa mga torista? i know, intrusion sa ilang habitat is one of the factors of their imminent demise.

One thing rare about the tarsius syrichta is that tehy are endemic to the greater mindanao faunal region.

The region is characteristic of the island provinces of BOhol, Samar Leyte and mainland Mindanao to Borneo.

The land bridges which theoritically connected the country to Indonsesia may have something to do with this.

Apart from that, they are extremely territorial, one that even forces parent tarsiers to kill their young should they find the babies a threat and competition for food in their appointed territories.

A study has shown that a femal tarsier, when "placed" too far away from her favorite territory simply died, possibly by holding its breath. Suicidal is one characteristic of these marsupials.

According to research, stress, dislocation and pysical trauma can immediately cause a tarsier death.

Another big cause is the intrusion of human activity into their ranges have driven them farther to the thicker forests where insects may not be that numerous as in secondary growth forests, and thus depriving the tarsier of .07 pounds of insect food per night hunt.

Cats. Yes, feral cats often hunt for tarsier which present itself as easy prey when they sleep during the day, them being nucturnal animals and sleep at the heights from a foot to to heights of easy reach by our feline pets.

Would sending tarsiers to regions like shared by greater Mindanao work? Perhaps. But owing to the fact that these animals which used to inhabit the places were forced to extinction or near it, the may may spring some doubts. However, we believe there is not harm in trying, especially when there is available fund to initiate research on this suggestion.
