That the spirit of the Boholano is alive and well for blooming, blossoming, and booming Cagayan de Oro City as it celebrated the 2012 Kagay-an Festival.

The feast which celebrates St. Augustine gathered together hundreds of Boholanos now residing in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental in the biggest assembly of Boholano blood dubbed Tapok Bol-anon 2012 at the city’s tourism hall last Sunday, August 26.

Gov. Edgar M. Chatto joined the well represented crowd coming from the different municipalities of Bohol. The governor who was guest of honor at the occasion also inducted into office the chapter officers of each town.

Chatto congratulated Aksyon Kaliwat Bol-anon (AKBO), which organized the affair and hopes to make it an annual gathering of Boholanos in Mindanao. He also updated fellow Boholanos of plans and programs that are aimed at the sustained development for the province of Bohol and recognized contribution of Boholanos, even those who are outside of the province to this progress.

AKBO was pioneered by members of the city council of Cagayan de Oro with the help of Msgr. Tex Legitimas who incidentally are of Boholano descent.

CDO Vice Mayor Cesar Ian Acenas hails from Jagna. He is joined at the city council by councilors Dante Pajo, interim president of AKBO, Adi Barba, Simeon Licayan, and ABC Federated President Donatello Acenas, Jr., all of Boholano descent. Even CDO Mayor Vicente Emano admits to familial relations with the Realistas of Baclayon.

During the assembly, Emano presented a plaque of recognition to Chatto for the assistance extended by the latter in gathering financial help which was turned over to the city government in the aftermath of Bagyong Sendong.

Chatto himself inducted into office the interim set of officers of AKBO during his brief February trip to Cagayan de Oro this year.

During that visit, Chatto along with Provincial Administrator Alfonso Damalerio II personally called on Emano at the city hall to hand checks amounting to P1, 301, 530, of which P600, 000 came from the Provincial Government and the rest contributions from Local Government Units (LGUs) across the province. Among LGUs who shared part of their calamity funds include Albur (P20,000); Alicia (P20,000); Antequera (P25,000); Baclayon (P2,000); Balilihan (P20,000); Batuan (P50,000); Bilar (P20,000); Calape (P20,000); Clarin (P10,000); Dauis (P60,000); Garcia Hernandez (P30,000); Guindulman (P50,000); Jagna (P50,000); Mabini (P30,000); Panglao (P100,000); Sagbayan (P25,000); San Isidro (P10,000); San Miguel (P10,000); Sevilla; (P10,000); Trinidad (P50,000); Tubigon (P20,000); and Valencia (P40,000).

To date, the city government of Cagayan de Oro is almost done awarding housing to Typhoon Sendong victims, including Boholanos who are now residing in the city.

Tapok Bol-anon 2012 was among line up of activities in the 2012 Kagay-an Festival which celebrated Cagayan de Oro back on its feet and moving forward. Sunday’s festivities also included the Cultural Street Dancing Competition at the Pelaez Sports Complex in the morning, and Miss Kagay-an 2012 in the evening. (Leah/EDCOM)
