Awit sa Bohol

 Awit sa Bohol

(Lyrics in Boholano)
Yuta kong minahal
Hatag ni Bathala
Sa adlaw'g gabii
Taknang tanan
Dinasig sa
kinaiyahan
Sa mga bayani yutawhan
Imong kalinaw giampingan
Lungsod sa bungtod nga matunhaw
Ug matam-is nga kinampay

Puti ang kabaybayonan
Walog sa suba binisbisan
Bahandi ang dagat ug kapatagan
Gugma ang tuburan
Sa kagawasan sa tanan
Panalanginan ka
Ihalad ko lawas ug kalag
Sa mutya ko'ng Bohol

[edit] Bohol Hymn
(English version)
This is the land I love,
The land God gave to me,
Caressed by the sun,
Bathed by the sea,
And kissed by the cool breeze
Night and day.
Here’s where the early heroes lived,
Here’s where they wrought peace and here they bled,
Here rise the marvelous cone-shaped hills,
Here’s sweet kinampay grows.

Blessed with white sandy beaches,
Rivers that water valleys,
Seas teem with fishes and cows graze
on the plains,
In ev’ry home love reigns,
God keep my homeland always free,
Let her forever be,
I pledge my strength, my heart and soul,
To my dear home, Bohol

The Bohol hymn was composed by the late Justino "Ning" R. Romea of Napo, Loon, Bohol who later settled in Maribojoc with his wife Susana Miranda (also rom Napo) and family because they were able to acquire a property there.  Hilig man gud mamulinaw tong Tatay ni Nong Tining, si Leon Romea (drama director in Napo, like his son). The song was composed in 1970 or early '70s with English lyrics. Then Gov. Lino Chatto launched a binisaya-translation-of-the-song contest. He could have translated it himself man gud. And I know he could do justice sa pag translate kay siya gud ang nakahibalo pag-ayo sa iyang gi sulat.  Tuod man, napadayon jud ang contest (won by Ma'am Ganade of Holy Spirit School), ug ang binisaya na ang nahibaw-an sa kadaghanan. Tungod kay managlahi man ang phrasing sa ininglis ug sa binisaya, expected jud nga naay ma "lost in translation".  Pananglit, the very beautiful line nga "caressed by the sun, bathed by the sea, and kissed by the cool breeze" nahimo na lang nga "dinasig sa kinaiyahan". Ang "night and day" nahimong "sa adlaw'g gabii, taknang tanan".

Romea also composed many school anthems (UB Hymn, BSAT Hymn, etc) and is best remembered for the love song "Ako Kang Paabuton" (kanunay masaypan nga "Buhi sa Kanunay"), the folk song "Sa Daplin sa Baybayon" as well as most of the songs featured in the annual ‘drama’ presentations in his native Napo for which he served as writer, director and musical arranger. Lately, I was surprised to listen to a downloaded version of "Ako Kang Paabuton" by Bayang Barrios.

Nong Tining was also a revered columnist of Bohol Chronicle. Up to this day, wala pay makatupong sa kanindot niyang mosulat og column, according to the current crop of journalists nga nakaabot pa niya.  In act, front page jud to iyang column, defying editing rules) kay daghan man mag-atang.

That is why walay Diocese of Tacloban, but Diocese of Palo. "Mo-unlod na pud ang Bohol kay pista man", they would say in jest.

Mr. Bean:

Here are some information regarding the late Justino ‘Ning’ R. Romea: composer of the Bohol Hymn or "Awit sa Bohol" and many school anthems.  He is best remembered for the love song "Ako Kang Paabuton", the folk song "Sa Daplin sa Baybayon" as well as most of the songs featured in the annual ‘drama’ presentations in his native Napo for which he served as writer, director and musical arranger.

Additional information regarding his father, Bernardo "Leon" Vidal Romea: Rondalla Trainer; Scriptwriter, Director and Musical Arranger for the "Drama" in Napo. Bernardo or "Pantaleon" or "Leon", as he was more popularly known, was born on March 12, 1895 in Barangay Napo to spouses Marcelo (Oyong Eloy) and Maria (Oyang Iyay) Vidal, a second wife.  His grandparents were Domingo Romea and Cecilia Ordubanes of Barangay Taytay. After completing his elementary education and first year of high school, the latter at Bohol High School, he qualified for a teaching post, a feat in those days.  On June 16, 1910, at age 15, he was appointed temporary teacher in Loon.  A few years later, he passed the teachers' examinations and went on to become principal for 19 years. Romea's command of the English language was grammatically flawless.  He bought American books and subscribed to local English magazines (e.g. Free Press, Graphics, etc.) hoping that his children would love or develop the habit of reading. They indeed became bookworms and their communication skills improved. His passion for music was such that he composed songs, organized rondallas wherever he was assigned in his teaching career, and promoted and participated in competitions.  This went on even through his retirement years.  He could skillfully play any of the string instruments in the rondalla but was at his best with the banduria.  Romea was keen in distinguishing the slightest discord that at times during rondalla rehearsals, he would suddenly wave a hand for a pause just to tune up a dissonant instrument. Romea was also called a "dramaturgo" for he wrote and directed stage plays or "drama" which always served as the culminating feature of the barrio fiesta celebration in Napo.  In fact, he is acknowledged as the original playwright, director and composer–musical arranger of Napo’s stage plays that are now mounted on May 25 of each year without fail.  It is believed that Napo holds the record of staging the longest running series of annual plays in Bohol, if not the whole country.

By the way, Mr. Bean, Mr. Eugene Mejares, who might also be your neighbor in Maribojoc, is also from Napo, Loon, Bohol. He collects 'drama' scripts and had directed quite a few stage plays during his prime.

Koddi Prudente,

Thank you so much for the wealth of information you provided behind the composer of the Awit sa Bohol.

About fifteen (15) years ago, I've read a reprint in the Bohol Chronicle of an article written by Ning Romea on the travails in their household and acts of visitors during fiestas. It was such an entertaining read and yes --  it made be long for more of his articles. Too bad there has not been any reprints of his articles since then.

Yes, I am yet to read a columnist of the present crop in our local newspapers that has the same caliber as Ning Romea.

Bennelynne would be an excellent choice!

Koddi,

Chorus:
Tohoi intawn ako,
Salig sa gi saad ko
Gugma kining way pagkalaya
Bisan isapnay sa luha

Kung ang kasing-kasing ko
Sa palad sakiton
Didto sa kalangitan
Ako kang paabuton

Kanta man ni sa simbahan.
Sagdi kay mangita ko sa YouTube ani.

Awit sa Bohol

(Lyrics in Boholano)
Yuta kong minahal
Hatag ni Bathala
Sa adlaw'g gabii
Taknang tanan
Dinasig sa
kinaiyahan
Sa mga bayani yutawhan
Imong kalinaw giampingan
Lungsod sa bungtod nga matunhaw
Ug matam-is nga kinampay

Puti ang kabaybayonan
Walog sa suba binisbisan
Bahandi ang dagat ug kapatagan
Gugma ang tuburan
Sa kagawasan sa tanan
Panalanginan ka
Ihalad ko lawas ug kalag
Sa mutya ko'ng Bohol

[edit] Bohol Hymn
(English version)
This is the land I love,
The land God gave to me,
Caressed by the sun,
Bathed by the sea,
And kissed by the cool breeze
Night and day.
Here’s where the early heroes lived,
Here’s where they wrought peace and here they bled,
Here rise the marvelous cone-shaped hills,
Here’s sweet kinampay grows.

Blessed with white sandy beaches,
Rivers that water valleys,
Seas teem with fishes and cows graze
on the plains,
In ev’ry home love reigns,
God keep my homeland always free,
Let her forever be,
I pledge my strength, my heart and soul,
To my dear home, Bohol

AYa San, unsa man pud ay hinapon ani? :D

You can never really live anyone else's life, not even your child's.

   Reply with quoteQuote

Disecting the Bohol Hymn, a song adult Boholanos should have memorized by heart would perhaps give us an idea of how we would like, as a people to prioritize our hierarchy of values.

This and still some of the realizations i got from a re-thinking about the lyrics of the song.

In summary, the song is basically an open statement (and with the lyrics) of how BOholanos consider the environment, the culture and its heritage as primary over all other things.

Responding appropriately to this call for environment conservation, culture and heritage protection and preservation as a subliminal action for the land we love is perhaps the main reason why we have grown economically in the last decade.

We will just have to pray we can sustain all these efforts by constantly comparing what we have done to the dream we want to bequeath to our kids.

So, should there be another contest to re-write the Boholano translation of Awit sa Bohol to be more faithful to the original English lyrics?

Every time we have gathering of Boholanos here in Thailand we do not forget to sing the Bohol Hymn aside from singing the Philippine National Anthem. It makes us feel that we are just meters away from our homeland, Bohol.

I have been living in Davao del Norte since 1969. Then I transfered in Digos City in 1981 because of my work.

I am still proud to be a Boholano.
