Arroyo to lead nationwide observance of Rizal's death on Sunday
President Arroyo will lead the nationwide commemoration of the 111th anniversary of the death of the country’s national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal on Sunday.
Mrs. Arroyo will preside over the flag-raising ceremony scheduled at 8 a.m. at the Rizal Monument in San Fernando City in La Union.
The president arrived Saturday with her family at the Mansion House in Baguio City to spend the New Year there. From the Mansion, Mrs. Arroyo will board the Presidential Chopper from Loakan Airport for a 20-minute flight to San Fernando City.
Cadets from the Philippine Military Academy will give the president full military honors with 21-gun salute when she arrives at Camp Oscar Florendo in San Fernando.
Government and local officials including La Union Gov. Manuel Ortega, La Union representatives Victor Ortega and Tomas Dumpit Jr., San Fernando City Mayor Pablo Ortega, National Historical Institute Executive Director Ludivico Badoy and Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr., will welcome Mrs. Arroyo upon her arrival at the camp.
The officials will escort her to the Rizal Monument in San Fernando City for the ceremony and floral offering.
The 111th Rizal Day commemorative rites will be replicated in various areas nationwide, including the Rizal Park in Manila, Rizal Shrine in Calamba, Laguna; Rizal Shrine in Dapitan City; Cebu City and Davao City.
The theme for this year’s celebration is "Isaisip at Isapuso ang Paggunita ng Kabayanihan ni Rizal."
Mrs. Arroyo also led the nationwide observance of Dr. Rizal’s martyrdom at the Rizal Shrine in Baguio City.
