Under the sponsorship of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and the University of San Carlos (USC) Cebuano Studies Center held a translation workshop dubbed "X ≠Y: Training Workshop on Literary Translation" at the Cebu Cathedral Museum last August 20-21.
Twenty fellows—ten from Cebu and ten from other parts of the Visayas―participated in the workshop.
During the first day of the activity, Dr. Erlinda K. Alburo and Prof. Merlie M. Alunan presented a lecture on translation, which tackled the concept, politics, reason, expectations, and tradeoffs of translation.
“Translation can only be as good as the original,†Alunan emphasized in her presentation and all throughout the workshop.
Each of the submitted entries of the participants was critiqued by a panel composed of Alburo, Alunan, and John Iremil Teodoro. The entries came in the form of translated poems, essays, and short stories from Cebuano or Waray to English and vice-versa. There were also translations of translated works by Middle Eastern and Indian writers. For Alburo, translations from or to Cebuano, “affirm the value of Cebuano literatureâ€.
Teodoro, on the other hand, believed that purpose is an integral part of undertaking a work on translation. One aspect is to identify gender issues that the translator want to answer in his translation.
On the second day, teacher participants from University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) and USC joined the session where Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu, workshop coordinator, delivered training modules on translation.
