By garnering a perfect score, a Filipino student has aced the just-concluded 13th Primary Mathematics World Contest (PMWC) here and helped put the Philippines on second place in the 14-nation competition.

With an 11-medal haul, the 16-member Philippine math team tied on Monday night powerhouse China in the annual contest, topped by Taiwan, which had produced two perfect scores.

Thirteen-year-old Adrian Reginald Sy, Grade 6 student of St. Jude Catholic School in Manila, was the country's lone gold medal winner.

Sy, who has been representing the Philippines in international math contests during the past two years, was one of only seven perfect scorers in this year's PMWC.

The Filipino numbers aces also bagged two silver and eight bronze medals in the tough competition.

The silver medals came courtesy of Farrell Eldrian Wu from the MGC New Life Christian Academy in Taguig and John Thomas Chuatak from St. Stephen's High School in Manila.

The bronze medalists were Andrew Lawrence Sy from St. Jude Catholic School, Ethan Riley Chan from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, Ezekiel Christian Ong from UNO High School, Rafael Jose Santiago from PAREF-Southridge School, Jonn Angel Aranas from Makati Science High School, Francis Concepcion from Philippine Cultural College, Benedict Ryan Tiu from St. Stephen's High School, and Clyde Lawrence Sy from Chiang Kai Shek College.

Adrian Sy dedicated his victory to his parents Reynaldo and Lily Sy, his teachers at SJCS and his trainers from Mathematics Trainers' Guild-Phils. (MTG).
