Philippine Started Negotiations for the Purchase of 2 Italian Navy Maestrale Class ASW Frigates

Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin announced that the country entered negotiations with the Italian government for the purchase of two Maestrale class Anti-Submarine frigates in a deal estimated at 11.7 billion Philippine pesos (280 Millions USD).

Eight vessels of this class are currently in service with the Italian Navy. The two Frigates to be transfered to the Philippine Navy are expected to be refurbished first, and likely see some of their systems and weapons upgrade or modernized.

The Maestrale class frigates primary task is Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), however their weapons and systems provides them with a high degree of flexibility which makes them capable warships in Anti-Surface (ASuW) and Anti-Air (AAW) warfare roles.

If the deal goes through, the two Frigates will be purchased as the solution to the Philippine Navy Deep Water Patrol Vessel and will significantly boost the Philippine Navy capabilities, especially in terms of Anti-Submarine Warfare.

The Philippines and China have been embroiled in a growing dispute over territorial claims in the South China Sea. The Philippines has launch an extensive modernization program for its Armed Forces as a consequence.

We need more. The Philippines needs to purchase 10 more Hamilton classes , and hopefully 5 more Maestrale Classes.

It should be a national prerogative to modernize the Philippine Navy so that by 2020, the Combined Philippine Fleet will be the strongest naval power in South East Asia.

Green,

We are also to receive 12 new Japanese warships that will be sent to bolster the Philippine Coast Guard. Two of them will be 1,000 ton large patrol ships that will be used for interdiction and border patrol services.

Understandably because the Chinese military command sees the Philippines as an American ally. By disrupting and challenging the territorial integrity of the Philippines, it indirectly affects American strategic calculus in the Western Pacific.

This is the pretext for increased American-Philippine military activities ; and the catalyst for the increased American military support for the Philippines.

For years the Philippine Armed Forces focused on internal issues in quashing muslim separatist rebellions and communist insurgencies and left its external defense capabilities at a minimum. By modernizing , the Armed Forces of the Republic of the Philippines is now able to establish a credible defense platform by which the Navy, Air Force and Army can collaborate to neutralize any external forces that will dare challenge the integrity of the territories of the Republic.

Never shall invaders trample our sacred shores...

Green,

I was actually very happy to hear that the Philippines is purchasing 2 of these large frigates. These frigates are larger than normal and are almost the size of the USN's ARLEIGH BURKE AEGIS Destroyers.

These Maestrale Class Anti-Submarine Frigates have a multifaceted platform in countering submarine threats, at the same time, has a powerful surface to air and ship to ship defense / offense battery platforms.

These 2 frigates carry a powerful punch and can even be considered Destroyers for the Philippine Navy.

To be honest, what I would like the Philippine Navy to acquire within the next 10 years is a patrol submarine. The Scorpene Class Submarine would be perfect for the Navy. It's fast, sleek, and it can render death to any foreign navy ship that threatens Fleet-controlled waters.
