More flash floods feared in Maguindanao

Residents of remote villages in nearby Sultan Kudarat have expressed apprehension of possible flashfloods anew as torrential rains continue to threaten Maguindanao and nearby provinces.

Sukarno Mamalinta, a resident of Barangay Gang, the hardest hit village among 15 low lying barangays of Sultan Kudarat, said fears developed among the villagers that a repeat of Monday dawn’s flashfloods that swept through their homes.

“May agam-agam kami, di malayong magbaha ulit dahil umaapaw ang Simuay river (We are apprehensive. Flashfloods might hit anew as Simuay river overflows,” Mamalinta said.

Senior Inspector Esmael Maguid, Sultan Kudarat police chief, said residents of low lying barangays decided to stay in higher grounds or homes of their relatives in other areas to avoid getting caught by rampaging flood waters.

Monday dawn’s floods have killed an elderly woman after allegedly suffering from cardiac arrest.

Many houses were damaged by floodwaters, especially those near the riverbank of Gang river in Barangay Gang.Simuay river emanates from the towns of Buldon, Barira and Matanog, where heavy downpour occurred Sunday night.

The state weather bureau reported the sightings of active low pressure area east of Mindanao and residents have been alerted of possible landslides and flashfloods. - PNA
