Koronadal cops, inmates foil escape try of detainees
KORONADAL CITY, Dec. 17 (PNA) -- Police and inmates foiled an attempt by four detainees to bolt out of the Koronadal City police lockup early Saturday.
Koronadal City police director, Supt. Barney Condes, told DXOM-AM Radyo Bida that the escape plot was discovered after detainees in another cell alerted police officers on duty at about 2:30 a.m.
Condes said the lockup watch officer quickly responded and prevented the escape of inmates Rex Valeriano, 29; Lyndon Calanza, 29; Alex Mangudadatu, 23; and Rodelo Moliji, 18.
Condes said all of them are facing drug charges and one of them is also facing robbery charges.
Recovered from the detainees' possessions were six spoons, a bamboo pole and a five-inch concrete nail that they used to carve a hole on a concrete wall.
Condes said the action of other inmates in alerting the police officers was the result of the humane treatment the police have been giving the detainees.
Following the discovery of the escape attempt, Condes temporarily suspended jail visits but noted that spoons are not among the banned items inside the half-way detention facility.
He also ordered the police to monitor the inmates strictly and institute measures that would prevent future attempts to flee from the lockup. (PNA)
