Armed men shot dead a Korean missionary Monday morning in Pasig City and briefly held captive two others who had just arrived in the country.
Cho Tae Hwan, a minister of Evangelical Worship, a religious organization based in Cainta, Rizal, died on the spot after he was shot thrice on Ortigas Ave. Ext. in front of Ever Gotesco mall in Pasig at around 12:40 a.m. Monday.
Senior Supt. Jessie Cardona, Pasig police chief, said Hwan and seven other Korean nationals he had just fetched from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport were in a van on Ortigas Ave. on their way to Cainta when a white van blocked their path.
Two men got off the second van and forced two Koreans identified as Kim Hyoung Gun and Kim Hyoung Sik into their vehicle.
They then shot Hwan who was behind the wheel and fled.
At around 4 a.m., one of the kidnapped Koreans, accompanied by a staffer of the Korean Embassy, went to the Pasig police station to report that he and the other victim had been released.
Cardona said they were still trying to determine the motive for Hwan’s killing.
