The Filipino chaplaincy in Brussels defended the move of three Philippine bishops sought President Arroyo's resignation because of the scandals hounding her administration.

At the same time, Rev. Fr. Raymund Gaspar, speaking on behalf of the chaplaincy, said that instead of being defensive, government officials should investigate and dig deeper into the accusations hurled against them by the militant groups and the Catholic Church.

“Ang mga panawagan nina Tobias, Yñiguez at Labayen ay nagpapakita lamang na ang Simbahan ay nagnanais ng isang gobyerno na tapat sa kanilang sinumpaan (The calls of Bishops Tobias, Yñiguez and Labayen merely showed that the Church wants a government that holds true to its promises),” he told an ABS-CBN Balitang Europe interview.

Earlier, Bishop Emeritus Julio Labayen of Infanta,Quezon, Bishop Antonio Tobias of Novaliches and Bishop Deogracias Yñiguez of Caloocan supported the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines' (CBCP) statement that under Mrs. Arroyo, the government is “morally bankrupt”.

The President and her administration are being heavily criticized as a result of allegations that certain Malacañang personalities distributed thousands of pesos in "cash gifts" to Mrs. Arroyo's allies in local government units.

Despite the controversy, Gaspar said he and the rest of the Filipino chaplaincy in Brussels will pray for "good governance" to reign in the Philippines.

“The Filipino chaplaincy in Brussels, in behalf of the Filipinos living here, are calling for all government officials from the president down to the local officials to show transparency and integrity,” he said in a statement.

Gaspara also cautioned the government to be careful and honest in dealing with government projects similar to the cyber-education project and the broadband network deal.

“Sana hindi ito maging dahilan para sa pagpapayaman ng mga nanunungkulan sa ating pamahalaan (We hope this will not be a premise for our government leaders to enrich themselves),” he added.
