Death of a UP student still a mystery
« on: August 31, 2007, 01:20:22 PM »
Mystery shrouds the death of a 20-year-old graduating student of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, who was rushed to a hospital after midnight Monday where he was declared dead on arrival.

Hours later, the mother of Chris Anthony Mendez, a public administration student who was the representative of his college—the National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG)—to the UP Student Council, said she received a phone call from someone who identified herself as her son’s landlady.

Cristina, who lives in Tiaong, Quezon province, said her first thought was that someone was playing a prank on her. According to the caller, Mendez had died after he was brought to the Veterans Memorial Hospital and his body was at the St. Peter’s Memorial Chapels on Quezon Avenue.

When she arrived at the funeral home yesterday morning, Cristina saw her son with bruises all over his body, particularly on the back of his arms and thighs.

An official of the NCPAG, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media, told the Inquirer that they suspected Mendez was a victim of hazing.

According to the statement of Jonathan Garduce, the guard on duty when the victim was brought to the hospital, Mendez was taken to the facility at 1:08 a.m. Monday by a man who introduced himself as Dr. Francisco Cruz. Cruz was on board a white Toyota Innova with license plate ZXB 393. He was accompanied by people riding in two other vehicles: a Nissan Trooper (WGL 515) and an Isuzu van (XAS 548).

According to the guard, Cruz and his companions left hurriedly after giving the hospital staff information about Mendez, who looked pale and unresponsive.
