Crime Rate In Central Visayas Goes Down

Crime volume in Central Visayas from January to November 2007 declined by 35 percent compared to the same period of last year based on the record of the Police Regional Office (PRO-7).

PRO-7 Chief Gen. Ronald Roderos during the monthly 'Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis' (TSIP) Forum this morning bared that police efforts to curb crimes and maintain peace and order paid off.

Street crimes also decreased by 50 percent in the region, according to Roderos.

In a breakdown of index crimes reported in the whole region, physical injuries recorded from January to November 2006 were 2,714 which decreased to 1,828 compared to the same period this year, a decline by 32.6 percent.

For theft, recorded for the past 11 months last year was 2,635 which dipped to 1,857 or a reduction of 29.5 percent.

Robbery cases went down from 1,178 from January to November 2006 to 861 cases for the same period this year, a drop of 26.9 percent.

Murder cases also dipped from 558 in 2006 to 437 cases this year while the 229 homicide cases last year dropped to 195 this year and rape cases recorded was at 223 also declined to 151 this year. The comparative statistics were taken from January to November 2006 and the same period for 2007.

PRO-7 Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division Deputy Chief P/Supt. Melvin Gayotin who gave the breakdown of the crime volume per province and key cities from January to November 2006 and 2007 said that except for Siquijor Province which posted a minimal increase in index crimes from 29 to 39 cases, all the rest reported a decrease in crime volume of index crimes.

Cebu Province posted a decrease in index crimes from 2,270 cases to 1,802 or a 20.6 percent drop while Bohol had 871 cases down to 833 and Oriental Negros data revealed that from 533 cases, this went down to 423, dipping 20.6 percent.

Cebu City's index crimes also went down by 20.6 percent from 2,270 cases to 1,802 while Mandaue City had the biggest drop with 38 percent from 519 cases to 321.

Gayotin also revealed that the crime solution efficiency rate for both index and non index crimes in the region increased from 77 percent to 78.52 percent for the period from January to November 2006 and 2007 respectively.

For index crimes, crime solution efficiency rate was pegged from 66.31 percent in 2006 which improved to 67.54 percent for the past 11 months in 2007.
