The
construction industry in Mindanao is a boom, making the architecture profession competitive, members of the United Architects of
the Philippines (UAP)-Davao chapter said.
The ongoing construction works of malls, houses, condominiums and office buildings in the key cities of Mindanao including the cities of Davao, Panabo, Cotabato and Tagum marked the brisk growth of the construction industry, UAP members Architects Jay Mendoza, Francis Gerard Hidalgo and Agatha Ellen Valencia said.
Major construction projects cannot proceed without structure designers or architects. Hence, the booming industry made architectural fees to level off in Mindanao, Mendoza said.
In Davao City, the Robinsons Mall and Ayala Center-Davao, condominiums and housing projects clearly manifest a booming construction industry.
Valencia said she is very optimistic about the construction industry and the architect profession in Mindanao amid the rising of construction projects, including schools and call centers.
She said Davao City and nearby provinces are perfect for the latest concept of sustainable architecture or green architecture because of a predictable weather.
Sustainable or green architecture pertains to the use of environment such as rain, wood, wind, open spaces and the like in structural designs.
Hidalgo, for his part, identified the arrival of at least 10 airplanes a day in Davao City to prove that businesses thrive in the city and the entire Mindanao.
"We are an agriculture-based island, which means we are dollar earners, hence are capable of infusing huge investments," Hidalgo said.
The architect profession and the construction industry also find a niche in the demand for hospitals following a mandate for all government units to build a public hospital. - PNA
