Maribojoc, Bohol

The Lincod basketeers came from behind Sunday night to clinch the 2007 Maribojoc Christmas Basketball League (MCBL) crown at the expense of the SVI Goodah players at the Maribojoc Sports and Cultural Center, this town.  Goodah suffered a heart-rending 84-80 defeat after leading in the early minutes of play and midway in the last quarter.

It was Goodah’s second loss in two outings in their best-of-three series for the MCBL crown.
Enjoying a three-point cushion at 11-8 and 13-10 in the initial start of play, Lincod overhauled Goodah’s lead at the end of the first quarter, 20-19.

The Lincod cagers thru the heroics of skipper Albryann Redillas and point-guard Mark Sarmago, widened their lead in the early part of the second quarter, 29-19.  They continued occupying the driver’s seat until buzzer time when the half-time score settled at 40-35 in their favor.

In the ensuing play, the powerful Goodah combination of Rene Dumandan, Jr., Joshua Genovia and Dondon Redulla staged a rally and overturned the game in their favor, 57-48.

But foul trouble haunted Goodah’s camp going into the fourth quarter.  With Goodah’s mainstays fouling out in succession, Lincod went on a rampage and evened the score 75-all with a minute and 37 seconds left before regulation period.

Series of blunders compounded Goodah’s woes as the Lincod players went on a scoring spree in the dying seconds of play.  They were up by four points at 84-80 as the buzzer signaled the end of the crucial game.
Lincod’s slippery guard Mark Sarmago received from Mayor Boy Evasco the Engr. Paulito Fuertes Cup as the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).  Legaspi-based lawyer Eddie Busalla, an original MCBL cager, donated the trophy to perpetuate the memory of the founding organizer of the 47-year old league.

On the other hand, three-point artist Albryann Redillas romped away with the league MVP award.
Mayor Evasco also awarded cash prizes and trophies to the following top winners: Champion – Lincod; 1st Runner-up – SVI Goodah; 2nd Runner-up – Dipatlong; and 3rd Runner-up – Bayacabac.  The awarding rites was emceed by Municipal Kagawad Liling Villas.

Meanwhile, the MCBL management committee chose the following top players of the yuletide tournament: Nick Kromwell Vencilao and Moraga of Punta Cruz; Albryann Redillas and Mark Sarmago of Lincod; Jaylord Cañones and Poncardas of Dipatlong; Ronie Petagara and Glen Geñoso of Punsod; Abecia, Lagtangon; Napiere, Jandig; Bryan Jerusalem, Bood; Carlo Jabines, Cabawan; Cruz Estomata, Sesame; Arsenio Cimafranca, Jr., Bayacabac; and Rene Dumandan, Jr., SVI Goodah.  They will represent this coastal town in future tournaments out-of-town.
