True or False: Loon-anons are the best cooks
« on: February 24, 2011, 08:56:08 AM »
Do you agree with this?

Most of the Loon-anons that I've met so far (my aunt is from Loon; married to my paternal uncle) are great cooks. I notice that in Loon, they make really good Crispy Pata and Afritada. Sus, ka lami'a da.

FALSE, too. But it is a most welcome compliment. If only for the memory of my tatay, uncle and auntie who were very good cooks. In fact, they made cooking a profession of sort as they were commissioned to cook for banquets in Loon and in other towns. Modesty aside, I can cook, too. So does my brother and a nephew.

to RG (Rey and Gwargz),

What is your specialty dish? And what is Loon known for (in terms of food)?

My aunt is from Loon. Every time she would cook the best talong during breakfast. She would also prepare and make the best piniritong galunggong served with sisi (with vinegar and hot sili). ay kulirez! arang kalami kaajo!

This was the best breakfast i ever had in my life. The Filipino style. (the kinamot kinamot style) ;D

PS. She also makes spaghetti really good; different from Italian-style because the kind of spaghetti she makes is rather sweet. :)

Binago. From "Binagol" or "Binagow", which means cooked inside a bagol (coco shell). Grated cassava with its juice squeezed out. Cooked plain or with brown sugar and/or young coconut strips. Best when grates are fine and served hot. Best with kinilaw and humba.

Binago is still sold every Saturday and Sunday at the Loon Public Market. By noontime, sold out na.

Natalio Pacomios Castillo, a young lad from Cabilao Island in Loon, survived on binago and pinaslan nga isda when he studied at the Loon Central Elementary School on the mainland. He grew up to become a bar topnotcher and Executive Secretary to the President of the Republic of the Philippines.
