Festivals, Cultural Events and Fiesta Calendar

Annual Festival of Lights or SidlaKasilak  - The festival not only pays homage to the town's patroness, the Our Lady of Light or "Birhen sa Kasilak", but also symbolizes the enduring qualities of the Loonanon.  "Sidlak" means to rise while "Silak" means to shine.  Loonanons rise above all adversities.  Their talents and capabilities have been highlighted in quite a number of sociocultural events.

Kasadyaan sa Napo - a homage to the Holy Child, it features a street dancing contest participated in by Barangay Napo's five permanent sociocultural groups, namely, Tubig-Loon, Wawog, Inang-angan, Tulay and Kabaybayunan.

Creative Industry Festival - Launched on December 15-16, 2007, this activity aims to promote individual talent and creativity in the arts; discover new products that are distinctly Loonanon and have potential for business; and discover talents and skills with market potential. The 2007 contest categories were: original Loonanon appetizer ("abregana" or "sumsuman") and delicacy or snack item; Christmas tree, Christmas lantern and fashion accessory using recycled materials; painting and sculpture; novelty or utility item; cross-stitching; piano and acoustic guitar playing; rondalla; dish garden; and pop dance.

“Drama” or Community Theater - The densely populated coastal village of Napo may make it to official records on Philippine theater as the venue of the country’s longest running series of stage plays. The community theater here has its beginnings with moro-moro, a form of entertainment during the Spanish times highlighted by simulated Muslim-Christian fight scenes that are always won, as expected, by the latter. Since many decades ago, every May 25 without fail, local thespians mount a play to highlight the celebration of the feast of the Santa Cruz (Holy Cross).  The local residents get involved as actors, singers, directors, stage managers and playwrights. World War II cut short the staging of the play, but it was immediately resumed after the liberation of the country from the Japanese occupation. For the local residents, the play is the single biggest cultural event of the year, the success of which everybody wants to be a part of.  Thus, the fisherfolk share with the rehearsing actors their meager catch.  Some volunteer to make errands for the director.  Above all, the barangay allocates at least 10,000 pesos per year to mount the production.  Napo residents working elsewhere also donate cash. Barangay Canhangdon Occidental also has a theater group but it does not mount an annual presentation.

Commemoration of the Battle of Moalong and Municipal Day of Prayer for World Peace - The idea of holding this cultural event was hatched in response to the 7/11 terrorist attack in the US.  The first commemorative rites were held on the 59th anniversary of the Battle of Moalong, on September 22, 2001. The annual observance has been mandated through Municipal Ordinance No. 02-004, Series of 2002. Some of the cultural activities include the following: recognition of war veterans, walk for peace, bedecking the tree of peace with paper birds bearing texts of prayers for world peace, releasing of while balloons, "bugsay sa kalinaw" (boat rowing contest), community singing and reading of petitions for world peace, launching of lighted and decorated floaters on the river, etc.

Holy Week rites - The reenactment of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday precedes a Good Friday dawn pilgrimage to Big Cross, a monument atop a mountain in Cabug, about six kilometers from the town proper.  In the afternoon the main highlight is a procession of images of saints who played diverse roles during the passion of Christ. The spectacular Easter "sugat" culminates at the "hugosan" where an angel descends from the clouds and removes the shroud representing the grief that Mary endured when Her Son died on the cross. While everyone jubilates, effigies of Judas are burned at the church plaza to symbolize every Christian's vow not to live a life of sinfulness.

Town fiesta on September 8 and barangay fiestas throughout the year
