The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in cooperation with the Negros Oriental Electric Cooperative (NORECO 2) have started the trimming and cutting of tree branches extending towards the direction of the national highway.
According to Engr. Antonietta Gamallo, 2nd Engineering District of the DPWH, they have acquired a cutting and trimming permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for all trees along the highway in Daro, Dumaguete City.
She said Bert Bravo who is the land owner of the lot at Villa Amada occupied by the “ukay-ukay†or used clothing vendors agreed to have the trees trimmed down to prevent further accidents in the future.
The owner also suggested to completely cut down an old tree after it was learned that its middle is already hollow.
If noted that a pedicab driver died when an acacia tree fell down in front of the former National Statistics Office (NSO) sometime last year while another victim also died when accidentally hit by a big branch that fell off last December 25.
A multi-sectoral council was organized to include the DENR, DPWH, Governor’s Office, Dumaguete mayor’s office, Traffic Management Office, NORECO 2 and a non-government organization to address the need to regularly trim or cut trees that endanger the lives of the public. -pna
