Surprise inspection at Cebu provincial jail yields contraband
CEBU CITY, Feb. 28 (PNA) -- A surprise inspection at dawn Tuesday at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) in Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City yielded contraband, including illegal drugs, cellphones, cash, bladed weapons and other gadgets, an official said.
The “greyhound operation†was conducted by operatives of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 7 at the CPDRC, home of Cebu famous dancing inmates.
PDEAD 7 Director Yogi Filemon Ruiz said they seized 19 medium-sized packs of white crystals believed to be methamphetamine hydrochloride, more commonly known as shabu, more than 80 cell phones, cash amounting to PHP92,000, bladed weapons, laptops and notebooks containing lists of creditors.
Ruiz said they were tapped by the Office of the Governor of Cebu to search the jail, which has more than 3,000 inmates.
Ruiz said they went inside the jail facility in Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City, at 1 a.m. Tuesday, with the assistance of personnel from the Cebu Provincial Police Office-Public Safety Company and Armed Forces of the Philippines-Central Command (AFP-Centcom).
"We searched the entire facility," Ruiz said.
Ruiz said they included the cell of suspected drug lord Alvaro "Barok" Alvaro in the search.
The CPDRC is situated near the Cebu City Jail.
A surprise greyhound operation conducted by PDEA 7 and the police in both jails in August last year also yielded illegal drugs, cash and bladed weapons. (PNA)
