The disaster preparedness program of Nueva Ecija received a big boost after the Spanish government extended a P144-million package that will be used for the province's four municipalities and a city that were severely affected by calamities in 2009.
The fund, which will be used for trainings on actual implementation of risk reduction activities, was coursed through the Spain's Agencia Espanola de Cooperation Internationale para el Desarulo (AECID) and the Philippines' Department of Interior and Local Government-Local Government Academy (DILG-LGA).
Marivel Sacendoncello, executive director of the LGA, said their agency picked Nueva Ecija to be among the pilot areas because of its "well-placed" disaster management scheme.
She said the program actually kicked off through a two-day workshop seminar at Microtel Suites here last Tuesday.
The workshop involved a study on previous disasters that struck and devastated some parts of Nueva Ecija.
Dr. Abraham Pascua, provincial director of DILG and co-chair of the provincial disaster coordinating council (PDCC), said the money was allocated to the municipalities of Rizal, Carranglan, Pantabangan and Llanera and San Jose City. - pna
