Negros Occidental governor pushes localized peace talks
BACOLOD CITY, Feb. 28 (PNA) -- Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. is pushing for localized peace talks with the communist rebels in the province.
Marañon disclosed the plan in a report Tuesday after President Rodrigo Duterte scrapped the peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) earlier this month.
“Ever since I got elected as governor, I’ve been telling them to leave the armed struggle and return to the society,†he said.
The Provincial Government of Negros Occidental has been working with the Philippine Army (PA) for the implementation of the Comprehensive Local Integration Program (CLIP) for former rebels.
The program seeks to provide former rebels psycho-social and socio-economic security and guide them to become productive members of the society.
During a review and assessment meeting last month, Provincial Planning and Development Coordinator Ma. Lina Sanogal, also action officer of Provincial Peace Integration and Development Unit, gave an orientation on the programs and projects of the provincial government designed to benefit the former rebels, help the community, and protect the environment.
Marañon told the former rebels, “The provincial government is always here for you, ready to help you.â€
The governor also urged them to send their children to school since the educated have more opportunities. (PNA)
