– /EIM) (BANAT NEWS)

He planned to surrender. But the police caught him first. Police escort Alfonso Saballa (center) to the Cebu City Police Office headquarters after his arrest one day since the discovery of his sister-in-law’s body in Talisay City.  (Sun.Star Foto/Arni Aclao)

WHEN Alfonso “Allan” Saballa started narrating how he killed his sister-in-law in their house last Saturday night, he was grinning.

Alfonso was arrested in an abandoned house in Barangay To-ong, Cebu City past 10 a.m. yesterday, a day after his sister-in-law Manilyn Saballa, 27, was found under the house in Sitio Garden, Poblacion, Talisay City.

He admitted killing her, but denied the rape angle. An autopsy result released yesterday, the police said, also showed no signs the 27-year-old had been sexually assaulted.

Gidat-ogan na lang nako sa bato (I hit her head with a hammer for four or five times. Then, I choked her with a wire and dropped her out through the window. Her dress got snagged as she fell, so I wrapped her body with a blanket and tried to bury her. But she floated in the canal there, so I put some rocks on top of her body),” Alfonso recalled.

Alfonso said he consumed a sachet of shabu worth P300 before that, so he could have the guts to kill Manilyn. He said he had planned and tried to do the crime before, because Manilyn meddled with his use of illegal drugs.

“Tungod sa kalagot ba, kana bang manghilabot sa dili iyahang problema, kana bitawng parte anang bisyo, makigtabi siyang Mama. Si Mama gani masuko, palayason man sad ta (I was mad at her because she always told my mother about my vice. My mother would then get mad at me, throw me out of the house),” Alfonso said.

He also admitted that he lit their house on fire after he killed Manilyn, but immediately put out the flames after realizing it might affect his own immediate family, too.

Plot

Alfonso also confessed that after he fled, he burned a store of his cousin in Campo 4, Talisay City because of a grudge.

“Maayong pangda-uban hurot para usa ra’ng gasto, usa ra’ng pataya, kanang mga nasuko nako (I thought it would be better to burn them all at once, all of them who are mad at me),” Alfonso told reporters.

Police identified the cousin as Jocelyn Dagwayan. The fire was stopped before it destroyed her house and store.

When asked if he had a message for his brother, Manilyn’s husband, who works in Kuwait, Alfonso bowed his head and spoke more slowly.

Tungod ra na sa imong asawa, Dong, nga dili maayo among communication (Forgive me for what I have done to your wife. It’s just because we could not communicate clearly),” Alfonso said.

He said he regretted what he did to Manilyn and her sister, whom he punched.

“Nakonsensya ko, uy. Unsaon ta man, nabuhat na man, uwahi na ang pagbasol (My conscience bothered me, but I can’t do anything about it now. It’s too late),” Alfonso said.

He denied that he raped Manilyn.

Where he hid

Alfonso was arrested by operatives of the Cebu City Public Safety Company (CCPSC) after they received information of his presence from residents there.

He hid in the mountains and slept by the river),” said SPO3 Rodrigo Deveraturda of CCPSC.

When they arrived in the area, Deveraturda said that Alfonso was not around. They checked an abandoned house nearby and found the suspect there.

Deveraturda said that Alfonso was shocked when he saw the police, but he did not resist arrest.

“Gipangutana namo, ‘Ikaw ‘tong si Alfonso Saballa?’ Diretso man siya’g ingon, ‘Yes, sir!’ (We asked him if he was Alfonso Saballa. He replied, ‘Yes, sir!’),” Deveraturda recalled.

Alfonso said it was his plan to surrender to To-ong Barangay Hall, since he is a registered voter there.

Senior Supt. Marciano Batiancela Jr., officer-in-charge of Cebu City Police Office, said he will award and commend the police officers responsible for the arrest.

Alfonso was later turned over to Talisay City Police Station while several charges are being prepared against him.

Husband

Supt. Germano Mallari, Talisay City police chief, said they will file a murder charge this week.

Aside from murder, a charge of physical injuries against Saballa for punching Manilyn’s younger sister, Jessa Lopez, will also be filed.

The Talisay City Fire Department is also contemplating on filing two counts of arson against Saballa.

Manilyn’s husband Victor plans to come home to Cebu on Thursday.

Reached through his Facebook account, Victor, who works in Kuwait, said that his older brother should pay for what he did.

“Maytang madunot siya sa bilanggoan. Pakabayran niya (I hope he rots in jail. He must pay for what he did),” Victor said.

The couple’s four-year-old daughter was reportedly sleeping beside her aunt Jessa in the living room when Alfonso attacked his younger brother’s wife.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
