The government’s flagship poverty alleviation project implemented in three Negros Occidental municipalities ended its three-year engagement with a total of 26 pro-poor projects completed amounting to P46.6 million.
Alma Jornadal, marketing officer of Kapitbisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS), said the project was implemented in Don Salvador Benedicto, Moises Padilla and Hinoba-an municipalities.
Of the 26 projects, six are in Don Salvador Benedicto; seven in Moises Padilla and 13 in Hinoba-an.
Regional Director Teresita S. Rosales of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office VI (DSWD-6) said these areas are under the KALAHI-CIDSS Phase 4 that started implementation in 2007.
Completed projects include eight community production and service facilities; six environmental protection structures; four foot and small bridges; four road improvements; two health stations; one multi-use building; and one water system level 2.
Of the P46.6 million total project cost, KALAHI-CIDSS’ grant for the three municipalities amounted to P32,210,808. The rest came from contributions of the municipal and barangay local government units and the community.
“The local counterpart component of the project invokes among the community a strong sense of ownership of the projects that they themselves identified, designed and labored hard to complete. Through this, we are confident that they will also remain vigilant to maintain the functionality of their projects,†Rosales said.
KALAHI-CIDSS is a community-driven development project that empowers the poor by strengthening their participation in local governance to reduce poverty.
KALAHI-CIDSS is implemented in 184 municipalities nationwide. As of March 2009, it has funded 5,289 sub-projects in 3,675 barangays.
In Region 6, the project has covered 20 municipalities from the provinces of Iloilo, Capiz and Negros Occidental and funded 715 infrastructure and basic support services amounting to some P541.7 million. (PNA)
