NFA to inspect markets even no reports of fake rice in NegOcc
BACOLOD CITY, July 2 (PNA) -- The National Food Authority (NFA) in Negros Occidental has not received any report on the presence of synthetic or fake rice in the province but it will conduct an inspection in markets this week as directed by the NFA Central Office.
Procopio Trabajo II, NFA provincial manager, said it is unlikely for fake rice to enter the province since local markets have choking rice supply, and retailers are equipped in determining whether the product is fake.
“With the competitive prices of rice in the market, I don’t think that our retailers will be tempted to buy fake rice,†Trabajo said.
Nevertheless, fake rice is real so awareness and vigilance should continue, he added.
Following reports on the alleged proliferation of synthetic rice in Mindanao, Trabajo said the NFA Central Office instructed them to inspect all markets in the country prior to the release of laboratory test result of alleged fake rice samples in Davao City.
In Negros Occidental, Trabajo said they will start inspecting both NFA and commercial rice retailers in major markets in Bacolod City Thursday.
He said that all licensed rice stores and retailers, including mall supermarkets, as well as traders from all cities and municipalities in the province will also be inspected in the coming days.
“It will be a simultaneous national inspection to contain fake rice spread that made initial showing in Davao City,†he added.
Trabajo also urged the public to be vigilant and report to NFA office any suspicious kind of rice monitored in the market.(PNA)
