A 13-year-old boy died and his father was seriously injured when a grenade went off while they were plowing the rice field in a village in Carmen town in North Cotabato, around 7:15 a.m., on Saturday, belated police reports said Monday.
Insp. Winston Seniel, chief of Carmen PNP, identified the slain boy as Joebert Abellana Librando, 13, of Sitio Kakal, Purok-7, Barangay Ugalingan in Carmen.
Seniel said the boy was walking along a partition dike of the rice paddy when he accidentally stepped on what appeared to be a booby trap: bamboo grass where the safety pin of a fragmentation grenade was attached.
The boy died on the spot.
His father Tirso, who was a few meters ahead of him, was hit on his back and was rushed to nearby Kabacan Medical Specialist Hospital in Kabacan, North Cotabato.
Seniel said based on the initial investigations, it was the boy’s father who set the booby trap.
“The boy’s father admitted to our operatives that conducted the investigations that it was him that set the trap. The booby trap was designed to hit those persons who would change the course of the irrigation in his area,†he said.
Seniel said they are readying charges against the boy’s father, including illegal possession of explosives. (PNA)
